MAKE YOUR DAY JUST A LITTLE LESS STRESSFUL AND A LITTLE MORE ENJOYABLE BY HELPING YOUR BRAIN TO SEE MINDFULLY
So you want to focus on one thing but your brain gets distracted by something else and carries you off. There was a great quote I liked that said, "Distraction, at its core, is your brain's confusion about what matters." (STEINHORST 2018) I think now that it's not so much "confusion about what matters," but confusion over what will give you the most fulfilling outcome. "Milo" (my name for my brain) prefers immediate gratification because of a little thing researchers call the brain's "Negativity Bias." This Negativity Bias is particularly strong in ambiguous situations, like the future. (PETRO 2013) Not knowing what the future might bring, Milo's initial preference is to grab me a small reward now, rather than take a chance on a bigger reward later. "A bird in hand is worth two in the bush." It's why Milo suggests I grab a readily available sugary snack now, rather than a more healthy snack that might take time to prepare. He's not sabotaging me, he's confused about what will give me my most rewarding outcome. Now I can choose to trick Milo by using tactics such as the 20 Second Rule (ACHOR 2010). Any course of action that takes longer than 20 seconds to initiate makes your brain less likely to choose it. So if I put sugary snacks in an out of the way place and healthy snacks right up front, when hungry, Milo is more likely to grab the more readily available healthy snack. Nothing wrong with that. But since I'm coaching Milo to listen mindfully to himself, I never deny him anything he wants to do. I just ask him to S.T.O.P. on the way to doing it: Step back from the action Take a deep breath Observe mindfully what he's is saying to himself about this Proceed with my best path forward. This is very powerful and I always praise and congratulate him just for doing it. There is no self discipline involved, just a little Aikido redirection of focus. It works for snacks and it works for distractions. 1000 times a day, when I am focused on One Thing, Milo will say, "Oh, just let's have a quick look at this Other Thing! You'll really enjoy it!" And mostly, that quick look would somehow snowball into a LOT of time spent on that Other Thing and bad feelings about not accomplishing what I wanted to get done! Now I say, "Great! No worries! Just do me a favor. On your way there S.T.O.P. before you go." This works great! Milo will pause, listen mindfully to what he is saying, and usually choose to stay focused. Not that I suggesting you should chain yourself to the present moment or task. Sometimes, when Milo listens mindfully to himself, he convinces me that it IS worth focusing on the Other Thing, or at least adding it to my To Do list. You are enough. You were born enough. You were born worthy enough and resourceful enough to live a meaningful and fulfilling life. The New American Mindfulness is designed to help you discover and act upon that understanding. 
It does that by having you coach your brain with compassion, because when you do that you are really being compassionate with YOURSELF. And when you have self compassion you realize that you truly are worthy. It does that by having you coach your brain to notice what happens when he listens mindfully to himself. He (your brain) realizes that beneath his acquired fears, he truly does have the resources he needs. They were there, at a deeper level, all the time. He just never noticed. I don't think mindfulness is primarily about trying to feel peaceful during stressful times. That just comes about naturally when you discover through mindfulness that you are enough: worthy enough and resourceful enough to find meaning and fulfillment in any situation. Your brain wants to protect you. Not just from physical harm... But also from anything that threatens your self worth - your sense of value as a human being. That's hardwired in. But there is a glitch. Your brain has a negative bias...especially when situations are a bit ambiguous - like when the motivation behind what someone says or does isn't crystal clear. Hi everyone! I know this is a stressful time for most, including myself. There is so much uncertainty and fear swirling around and many are living outside of their comfort zone. With the spa being closed by order of the state and social distancing, I will be offering distance healing sessions. You will need to put aside 45-60 minutes to lay down in a quiet space, we will talk via face time or phone before and after each session. All sessions are donation based as many have lost their source of income and I don't want anyone to feel like they should be denied healing because of a lack of funds.
