The majority of physical therapists (67.8%) reported work as being the greatest source of burnout and reported paperwork (33%) as being the largest source of stress at work.

As someone who has been in the field for a while, I can confidently say that being a physiotherapist is a rewarding journey. It's amazing to see how our work can positively impact people's lives. Seeing our patients recover from an injury or improve their mobility is truly fulfilling.

However, being a physiotherapist is not without its challenges. Patients may have different needs, learning styles, pain sensitivities and motivation levels and it's our job to adapt to each one of them. It can be tiring and being adaptable can be hard, but it's also what makes our profession so interesting and dynamic.

This is part of the reason I’m working on my new project developing a web-based tool to gain insight into patients on visit #1. It's currently in development and I would love for you to be part of the process, click the link below to Join the Journey!

Crazy, isn’t it?

When we see an iceberg towering in the water, the vast majority of it is hidden below the surface.

And sometimes it can feel like so much of what we know about our patients is hidden from us. I recently had a patient case that I realized I had missed some things in our initial visit.

It got me thinking again about the iceberg concept and ways to get a better patient picture when they first come in.

I asked myself:

Rather than waiting until visit six or ten to find out key aspects of the patient, what if I could know this on day one? And what if I could better understand patient motivation level, learning style, treatment beliefs, pain sensitivity from the beginning.

I'm embarking on a journey to solve that problem. Think of it as Outcome Measures 2.0. And if it’s alright with you, I’d love to bring you along on this journey of bringing this tool to life. Sleep plays a significant role in our overall health and wellbeing. As a physiotherapist, understanding the impact of sleep on patients' recovery and rehabilitation is essential. Sleep should be a priority for anyone seeking to improve their physical health.

During sleep, the body naturally repairs damaged tissues, builds new cells and restores energy levels. These processes are especially vital for patients undergoing physiotherapy, whose bodies need time to recover from physical stressors and treatments. Sleep deprivation can exacerbate pain and discomfort, which could inhibit patients from engaging in physiotherapy exercises and activities. It can also lead to increased inflammation in the body, slowing down the recovery process.

Sleep is crucial for mental health and emotional wellbeing. Patients undergoing physiotherapy may experience anxiety and stress related to their condition, and a lack of sleep can worsen these symptoms. By prioritizing sleep, physiotherapists can help their patients manage stress and anxiety, leading to better physical outcomes.

As a physiotherapist, it is essential to educate patients about the importance of sleep and develop healthy sleep habits. By prioritizing sleep, patients can achieve optimal health and wellness, leading to better physiotherapy outcomes.

Let's prioritize sleep to help patients achieve optimal health and wellness! 💤💪

Send me a DM if you'd like me to send you a free downloadable document that goes into more detail on each of the 16 reasons why sleep should matter to physiotherapists.

Hey, everyone! 🎄🎅🏼

The most wonderful time of the year is here! It's time to celebrate with your loved ones and enjoy the festive season. As physiotherapists, we are aware that the holiday season can be a bit hectic, but while we tell our patients to take care of themselves everyday...sometimes we forget to tell ourselves. So here is the reminder we all need to slow down, enjoy each moment, and take care of yourself and your body amidst all the hustle and bustle.

May your holiday season be filled with joy, love, and laughter 🎁🎉

As physiotherapists our work can be draining and demanding. I'm not going to lie, in the early years I even considered leaving the profession. Instead of a career change, what I really needed was to shift my perspective, manage my workload, and manage my stress.

I often write about being in a state of clinical flow. A place and space that balances my skills, challenge, stress levels and boredom. To learn more about to how to stay in a place of clinical flow and experience less anxiety and overwhelm, read my blog - How to Overcome Anxiety and Overwhelm to Sustain Clinical Flow ➡ https://360clinician.com/blog/how-to-overcome-anxiety-and-overwhelm-to-sustain-clinical-flow/
