❗New Policy Change Reclassifies Community Health Centers Under PRWORA with dire implications❗

📰 Our latest Notes from Washington explains the policy change and potential impact: https://geigergibson.publichealth.gwu.edu/trump-administration-reverses-decades-old-policy-immigrant-eligibility-federal-programs

On July 14, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a Notice expanding the definition of “federal public benefit” under the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA). This policy reverses over two decades of settled interpretation and includes community health centers (CHCs) among the affected programs.
This change may have significant implications for health center operations and access to care for certain immigrant populations.

📅 HHS is accepting public comments through August 13.

Community Health Centers Are Increasingly Important to Medicare Beneficiaries:

📈3.4 million Medicare beneficiaries are served by CHCs

💊 Older adults who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid have greater health needs than those eligible for Medicare alone, presenting a role for CHCs but also a potential resource strain

🏘️ Medicare beneficiaries served by community health centers are more likely to live in rural areas

🩺 Medicare beneficiaries served by CHCs are generally in poorer health with higher rates of depression, blindness/difficulty seeing, deafness/difficulty hearing, obesity, and smoking

↗️ Over their 60-year history, community health centers have been more than places of care—they’ve been engines of empowerment.

🌱 For the duration of the health center movement, they have long tackled the roots of health by addressing economic, social, and environmental needs, as defined by the communities themselves.

is March 25-31! Today we highlight the many stories and historical photos and documents we have on the CHroniCles website that celebrate the story of Migrant Health Centers and the vital work they do to care for and reach seasonal agricultural workers who are vulnerable to illness, injury, and disenfranchisement while doing the vital agricultural work that feeds the nation and world. Health centers are critical infrastructure that support these farmworkers' labor, providing accessible, linguistically and culturally appropriate healthcare.
