Mum_Hood is a pre and post-natal health and fitness programme, designed by mums for mums, to provide the tools for a healthy body and mind throughout pregnancy and beyond. Created by Pip Black and Joan Murphy, mums and founders of Frame (moveyourframe.com), Mum_Hood is here to educate and motivate our community on the many benefits of safe and effective workouts, sensible nutrition and staying in a positive head space throughout this ridiculously exciting, yet often overwhelming period of our lives. All our programmes are carefully designed to deliver content which is specific to the stage you're at, to take away the worrying and Google searching that can often add extra burden, rather than simplifying and reassuring. During our first pregnancies, we were shocked at the lack of information out there for expectant mothers regarding what type of exercise aside from swimming and walking, that it was safe to continue. As the number of women regularly exercising increases, this information has never been more in need. Similarly, post-natal exercise and nutrition is extremely important to help put our bodies back together post-birth. We've seen time and time again mums get to a certain stage post-birth, decide it's time to lose their baby weight and then throw themselves head-first into high intensity/high impact exercise, often resulting in injury, or at least tears! We can't emphasise enough how important it is to gradually get your fitness back, by starting with small, controlled movements and gradually increasing the range and intensity - think of it as similar to rehab after a severe spots injury. We totally understand that with a newborn to look after, exercise is often not top of your agenda, which is why we've made sure all our programmes are short and super easy to fit in around naps and chores. By taking 10 - 20 minutes 3-5 times a week to look after yourself, you will be amazed in the positive affects on not just your physical but mental health. We've bought together advice and information from a range of experts, crossing Pilates, Physiotherapy, Midwives, Nutritionists, Surgeons, hypno-birthing and Personal Training to create the most thorough and well-rounded programme available. We are here to support you throughout your journey, to motivate and inspire you even on the tough days, and to make you laugh.. because sometimes that's all you need to get you through the day (that, and a stiff glass of gin... sorry pregnant ladies - it wont be long!) x

This Friday, (Friday 21st February) we have an extra special Postnatal fitness class as we have a talk with Xena Life, a physiotherapist discussing postpartum recovery! Let’s get together, have a coffee and a catch up and ask .life_ all the Postnatal questions. ☕️

Octavia is a physiotherapist of 15 years and the founder of XENA LIFE LTD.
As a physio she practices with a blend of functional rehabilitation, biomechanics, scar massage, Pilates, and breathwork, drawing on fifteen years of experience in complex trauma rehabilitation, restoring resilience and confidence in her clients. Octavia understands the mindset needed to push through the challenges of postpartum recovery, the want to be at your best and the desire to get back to doing what you love.

On Saturday the 22nd February we have an extra special Prenatal fitness class as we have a talk with Katie from McGuiness, a hypnobirthing specialist. Katie will talk about what hypnobirthing actually is and how powerful it can be in maternity care and labour.
Giving you simple tools that you can use to help you feel relaxed eg; Breathing, guided relaxation and why these are important. 🤰

Book onto the prenatal fitness class at 9.15am to be included in Katie’s talk. Teas and coffees will be provided. ☕️

How to check for Diastasis Recti (Abdominal Separation) 👇

Knowing how to measure this split or abdominal separation is a super helpful way for us to be able to manage our diastasis recti repair and feels empowering to be able to frequently measure the gap to see if your efforts are paying off and if you’re doing the exercises correctly 💫
Diastasis recti is measured by the number of finger spaces that fit in between the two re**us abdominis muscle bellies. Check out our measurement guide which is pretty straight forward:

Normal = 1 finger space separation or less.
Diastasis recti = a separation or gap of 2 or more finger spaces or a distance of 25 mm (just less than 1 inch)
Extreme diastasis recti = a very large separation of greater than 4 finger spaces.
Here’s how to check:
▼ GET YOUR AB GAP ON ▼
• Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor
• Place fingers just below the sternum
• Lift head off the floor
• Work your way down to the p***c bone
• Note where the widest separation is, the length of the separation and the depth
• The deeper and softer the tissue is the longer it can take to heal.
