Have you ever been relaxing on the massage table, hoping the stress and tension melts away before your hour is up...and suddenly the Therapist finds a super tender spot and you hear something like, "Yep, you really have a lot of tension in this area" ( like you didn't realize that already 😕)! Maybe you regularly receive Deep Tissue Massage and kind of anticipate the pressure of working out that tension but wish there was something you could do between massages to keep the knots from getting out of hand. In an earlier post I wrote about the easiest self therapy that's free: stretching! Well, combined with stretching, I wanted to talk about the next most economical self-therapy: a tennis ball! I used a tennis ball today to target a trigger point (painful knot) in my hips that was making me wince when I went to get dressed or squat down to pick up things on the floor. By pressing the ball on a precise point, using your body weight, you can help make those knots dissipate! There are several useful YouTube videos illustrating how to do this for hips, quads, shoulders, glutes etc. Basically you are placing the ball in the general area of the knot, pressing against the floor, wall, chair etc and gently rolling it until it hits on THE SPOT which will probably "hurt so good". Once you find the spot, stop rolling and keep the steady pressure for about 20 seconds and up to a couple of minutes. When the pressure is really intense, take deep, slow breaths. The "good-pain" should start to lesson after about 10-15 seconds until it virtually dissipates. Usually those knots come in groups and you can simply adjust your weight and find another one. If possible, follow this exercise with a few minutes of stretching, then let the area rest before exerting those muscles heavily (don't go right into a workout). Here is one link showing how to do this self trigger point massage on the upper trapezius muscles of the shoulder. https://youtu.be/HzVO9DU-bog
Look for a special coming up for a free tennis ball and pain-relieving creme!
