International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) The mission of the International Liver Transplantation Society is to promote and disseminate multidisciplinary scientific advances in liver transplantation

05/05/2026

The liver transplant community is at a defining moment — and no one captures that better than ILTS President Prof. Valeria Mas.

In this message ahead of the ILTS Annual International Congress 2026 in Geneva, she reflects on the challenges the field faces, from equity in access to the growing complexity of patients we treat, and on the remarkable momentum building across the globe through technology, clinical innovation, and international collaboration.

Her message is a reminder of why this community gathers every year — not just to share science, but to reconnect, build new partnerships, and inspire the next generation of leaders who will carry the field forward.

Geneva is where that conversation happens next. May 6–9, 2026.

When is a patient too sick to transplant — and when is transplantation the only option left? The ILTS/EASL/AASLD Joint Symposium will take on one of the most clinically challenging questions in the field.

"Managing that 'Super Sick Patient' as a Bridge to Liver Transplantation" covers the line between transplant candidacy and futility, critical care management of ACLF-3, a live debate on transplanting through active infection or sepsis, and global access and allocation approaches that affect outcomes for the sickest patients on the waitlist.

📅 Thursday, May 7 | 1:45 PM – 3:00 PM | https://mcicanada.swoogo.com/2026-geneva/program

Moderated by Sarwa Darwish Murad and Kymberly Watt, with speakers Florent Artru, Marina Berenguer, Francois Durand, Shahid Husain, Nadim Mahmud, and Scott Biggins.

There is no better person to welcome you to Geneva than the Local Chair of the Scientific Program Committee himself.

Professor Christian Toso shares why the ILTS Annual International Congress 2026 is more than just another medical meeting—from cutting-edge liver transplant data and multidisciplinary exchange to first-of-its-kind high-fidelity simulation workshops and machine perfusion training at the University Hospital of Geneva.

What makes the ILTS Congress truly unique? According to Dr. Prashant Bhangui, it's the platform.

Surgeons, hepatologists, anesthesiologists, and every allied discipline — all on the same stage, discussing what's state of the art in liver transplantation today and in the years ahead. In his own words: an academic and social extravaganza.

Some lessons only come with experience — and this session isn't afraid to name them. The ILTS/iLDLTG Joint Symposium brings together some of the most respected voices in living donor liver transplantation for an honest, expert-led conversation about where the field still falls short.

"What We Still Get Wrong in LDLT: Lessons from Experience, Not Textbooks" addresses patient selection errors, inflow modulation challenges in both small-for-size and large-for-size scenarios, gaps in training and standardization, and the persistent difficulties in international comparison and benchmarking.

📅 Thursday, May 7 | 3:15 PM – 4:30 PM | https://mcicanada.swoogo.com/2026-geneva/program

Moderated by Mureo Kasahara, with speakers Jan Lerut, Kim Olthoff, Mohamed Rela, Seisuke Sakamoto, and Yaman Tokat.

Today, April 19, is World Liver Day — and this year's theme, Solid Habits, Strong Liver, speaks directly to something our community understands deeply: the gap between what patients know about liver health and what we see in clinical reality.

Liver disease is largely preventable, yet it continues to progress silently in millions of people worldwide. Bridging that gap takes more than research and clinical excellence — it takes visibility, education, and community action.

As liver transplantation professionals, we are uniquely positioned to carry this message beyond our institutions and into the broader conversation. Today, we encourage every ILTS member to use this moment to raise awareness within your networks, your communities, and your platforms. Together, we can build a world where fewer patients reach the transplant list because we acted earlier.

🚨 Happening this Thursday! The ASTS and ILTS Joint Webinar brings together leading specialists to tackle two of the most technically demanding challenges in pediatric transplantation: surgical innovation in technically variant grafts for super-small recipients and modern interventional radiology techniques for managing portal vein thrombosis.

How far can surgical innovation and interventional radiology go in expanding transplant eligibility for the most complex pediatric cases? Join the conversation tomorrow and find out.
