Truman Davis shouldn’t be here...

This summer, the Valley High School - WDMCS student collapsed in his house. EMS workers performed CPR to keep him alive as they rushed him to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. That’s when doctors discovered Truman’s organs were shutting down.

MercyOne surgeons and lifesaving blood kept him alive. His doctors call him a “miracle patient.”

He received over 100 blood products from LifeServe Blood Center, and now he and his family want to give back by hosting Truman’s Miracle Drive. LifeServe supplies blood to EMS in Des Moines and West Des Moines!

The metro is officially carrying blood. It will be safely stored with District Chiefs and supervisor vehicles, to provide immediate care around traumatic incidents. EMS teams will use that lifesaving blood to perform transfusions right at the scene.

This is a huge win for everyone involved, and will pave the way for EMS all over the state of Iowa!

Several people were instrumental in making this happen, including Des Moines Fire Department Lieutenant Dan Davis, the West Des Moines Emergency Medical Services Deputy Chief Brian Rayhons, LifeServe Medical Director Alex Smith and Vice President of Quality Grant Pfeifer, and so many more.

In 2005, Stanley County School District student Tyler Wilcox asked his parents a simple question. “Can we hold a blood drive?”

At 16, Tyler was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. He underwent treatments and surgeries, and needed over 200 blood products. But, Tyler always had a positive attitude and looked for ways to give back.

Tyler passed away before his first blood drive, but his spirit launched a movement. What began as a one-day effort has blossomed into a three-day community celebration...the Tyler Wilcox Memorial Guns n' Hoses Blood Drive.
