BEAUTY IS POWERFUL, BUT SAFETY IS ESSENTIAL AND ZAMRA ENSURES THE TWO GO HAND IN HAND

The decision by the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority - ZAMRA to regulate cosmetics is one of the most important public health moves in recent years. While cosmetics are often viewed as harmless beauty products, the reality is that many contain chemicals that can cause long-term harm if left unchecked.

By bringing cosmetics under formal regulation, ZAMRA has recognized that beauty should never come at the expense of safety.
This initiative protects consumers from products containing harmful substances such as mercury, hydroquinone, and corticosteroids, which have been linked to kidney damage, skin disorders, and hormonal imbalances. It also ensures that every product on the Zambian market is clearly labeled, properly manufactured, and traceable, helping consumers make informed decisions about what they apply to their skin and hair.

Furthermore, cosmetic regulation promotes fair trade and accountability among importers and manufacturers, ensuring that only safe and compliant products reach the public. It also aligns Zambia with international best practices and strengthens the country’s reputation for prioritizing consumer safety.

By regulating cosmetics, ZAMRA is not only protecting health but also empowering the beauty industry to grow responsibly. It sends a strong message that in Zambia, beauty is more than appearance , it is built on quality, transparency, and trust.

IN THE END, IT'S NOT WHAT WE HAVE, BUT WHO WE ARE, THAT TRULY DEFINE US

I sometimes wonder why society values people with material things over those without. My friend recently shared a story that made me think even more about this.

He told me about a man who moved to his neighborhood a few years back. The man seemed quiet and humble; he didn’t have much to show materially. Every day, he’d walk to the temple and back, dressed simply, always friendly and polite. He tried to connect with his neighbors, greeting everyone with a warm smile and showing kindness whenever he could. But despite his efforts, no one in the neighborhood seemed interested in him. He wasn’t invited to weddings, gatherings, or celebrations—not even at the temple, where people often gathered for events.

The only people he had any real connection with were my friend and a few others from the temple. They’d chat from time to time, share stories, and enjoy each other’s company. But beyond that small circle, it was as though he was invisible to the rest of the community.

Then, one day, everything changed. He bought a beautiful car, the kind that turns heads when it drives by. Suddenly, he was no longer invisible. People began to greet him enthusiastically. Neighbors who had ignored him before now wanted him at their gatherings. Weddings he’d never been invited to now had a seat saved just for him. People who had once overlooked him were now eager to interact and be seen with him.

My friend asked me, "Is that really the way life should be?" Why did it take a car—something material—for people to recognize his worth?

It made me think about how people can be judged by what they have instead of who they are. This man hadn’t changed at all; he was the same kind and polite person he’d always been. But the world around him had shifted, valuing him only when he had something to show.

Perhaps it’s a reminder that true worth isn’t defined by material things. We might all benefit from looking beyond possessions and seeing the person for who they are, not what they have.

Unfinished Love: When Moving On Feels Impossible

There was a lady who had been courting the elder brother of a friend of mine. They were deeply in love, and soon after their engagement, tragedy struck,her fiancé passed away suddenly, leaving her heartbroken and lost. For some time, she tried to move on and find love again. However, the men she encountered didn’t treat her with the same sincerity and commitment she had experienced before. They played with her emotions, leaving her feeling used and disillusioned.

In her frustration, she would call my friend and say, "Go and wake your brother. I want him to come and marry me!" It was her way of expressing how much she missed the love and respect her late fiancé had shown her—something no other man seemed able to give.

When I heard this real story, it touched me deeply. Despite the sadness of her situation, there were three powerful lessons I learned from her:
1. Resilience in the Face of Loss
Despite the tragedy of losing her fiancé, she continued to try and move forward. She could have easily shut herself off from love and given up hope, but instead, she kept trying to build new relationships. Her persistence in seeking happiness after such a deep loss shows a strength of character that refuses to be defeated by grief.
2. Knowing Your Worth
Even though she was heartbroken, she never settled for less than what she deserved. The men she met afterwards didn’t treat her with respect, and instead of accepting that, she stood firm in her belief that she deserved better. Her demand for genuine love and loyalty is a reminder that knowing your worth is key in any relationship.

3. Honoring True Love
Her longing for her late fiancé wasn’t just about missing him; it was about cherishing the genuine connection they had. She honored the love they shared by refusing to accept anything less. This teaches us to value true love when we find it and not to settle for relationships that don’t reflect the same depth and sincerity.

This lady's story, though filled with pain, shines with hope, strength, and a deep understanding of her own value. It reminds us that, even when life takes away what we hold most dear, we can honor that love by refusing to settle for anything less than what we deserve.

Saddened by the death of a participant during the ABSA marathon today, it’s a sobering reminder of the risks involved in strenuous physical activity, especially for those who have been inactive for a long time.

Engaging in intense exercise after long periods of inactivity can put immense strain on the heart, muscles, and lungs. One possible cause of death in such situations is sudden cardiac arrest, triggered by the stress placed on an unconditioned heart. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, or undiagnosed heart conditions can also contribute to complications during or after strenuous exercise.

To avoid these risks, it’s crucial to ease back into physical activity gradually. Starting with low-impact exercises, like walking or light jogging, allows the body to adjust. Regular medical checkups before beginning any intense workout regimen are also important to identify any underlying health issues.
