Year 4 in the books!
It’s been a pleasure working with students in High Point University’s DPT Class of 2026 this summer.
We wrapped up our Sports PT / S&C Elective with a full weekend diving into the lower extremity.
Topics covered included Lower Extremity Training Principles, Blood Flow Restriction Training, Return-to-Sport Testing, and case studies for the post-operative knee and lower leg.
We spent time in the lab implementing in-line dynamometry for the hip and knee, calculating joint torque to help decision making, using video analysis to gain insight during jump testing, and experiencing the effect that simple cues and tools like metronomes can have on helping us dial up or dial down the intensity of plyometric exercises.
The course has grown into an elective that provides a really awesome view into sports rehab & high performance, with lessons that can immediately be applied in their upcoming clinical work.
It’s information that I wish I was exposed to as a student and I’m grateful to for being so forward thinking in their curriculum development.
Good luck to my students as they close out the last two weeks of the didactic curriculum, take their comprehensives, and prepare for their year of clinical work.
I have no doubt this group, like the others before them, will go on to do big things!

HIGH POINT SPORTS SELECTIVE - SUMMER 2025
Great first working diving deep into the upper extremity!
We spent the our first weekend discussing periodization, training principles, strength testing, return-to-sport testing, shoulder instability, and wrist injuries.
This year we spent a lot of time in the lab, providing time for the students to come up with their own set-ups for testing strength for global and isolated movement patterns… then discussing as a group what information we were getting from each set-up, their pros and cons, and how to make each of them better to answer the question we’re looking for.
We talked about the value of using set/rep methods to provide “quick and dirty” intervention guidance, and more objective testing methods when we needed more precise answers to support our rehab progression.
In addition, we practiced setting up, coaching, and performing functional testing… discussing what qualities we were evaluating with each test and where in the rehab process each test fit.
Appreciate the hard work this class put in over the weekend, and the opportunity that provides me to pass along this level of information for our 2nd/3rd year students.
Looking forward to our second weekend where we wrap up with the quarter.

I haven’t been this nervous for an event in a while, but I trained really hard for this race and put a good deal of pressure on myself.
The goal was to break two hours in the half, hit a bodyweight sn**ch, and at least tie my best on the clean and jerk during the process.
At the start of my final 3 month block, I sort of let the Olympic lift goals go. They hadn’t been in the rotation that long, knew I’d only be lifting 3x/week, and thought it would be best to just settle on drilling technique while my main focus was running.
My bodyweight was a little too high anyway, mileage was 28-32 miles/week, and the run goal was enough.
About a month before the race, things were sort of clicking. I ended up PRing the sn**ch, hitting an easy 90% single of my squat, and then ran a 12 mile 2-hour training run in the same week. The sn**ch was surprising, my legs felt as strong as ever, and the run put me right where I needed to be.
After that, work picked up and I had a weekend with very little sleep, hit too hard of a training run under recovered, and dug my fatigue hole really, really deep.
That put me in this two week period where I was exhausted. All the time. I committed to a two week taper, stopped pushing the weights, scaled back my running, and hoped for the best.
The first taper week was terrible. Every run was slow, at a higher than normal heart rate, and I generally felt like 💩.
Started to get it together a little more on race week and tried to find comfort in saying “Tapers are weird. You’re supposed to feel like s**t. You put in the work.”
Really pumped to have broken that 2-hour threshold in Pittsburgh. And I owe a great deal of it to for pacing me through it.

Year 3 of teaching Advanced Sports as an elective course for 2nd year students in the program in the books!

Teaching has been quite a challenge. I have 30 hours to offload as much as I can, while keeping things digestible and relevant to operating as a sports physical therapist.

I’ve made edits each year, taking out some of the “nice to know” S&C topics and adding in a few PT related topics that I think are foundational in athletic rehabilitation. I truly think this year was the most cohesive version.

We started with programming basics… physiology, S&C testing, loading methodology, concurrent training principles, and periodization.

This led to a few special topics: Force production testing, force plate technology, blood flow restriction training, & return-to-sport testing.

We wound things up with two intensive weekends.. one focused on the upper extremity and one focused on the lower quarter.

In these lectures, we dove into various case studies centered around ACL reconstruction, SLAP repair, Achilles Tendon repair and TFCC repair, which allows us to touch back on our foundational material and apply it in a progressive rehab plan.

Labs were spent setting up inline dynamometry, implementing return-to-sport testing, and performing hands on assessment techniques.

My only regret… not having more time to teach!

It’s hard to articulate how much I enjoy teaching this class. I always wind up with a great group of students who help shape the future of this course. I left this past weekend with plenty of notes on how to adjust and provide an even better experience next year.

Thanks again to High Point’s class of 2025. Good luck in your clinical and thanks for your engagement this year!

Wrapped up year 2 of teaching “Strength & Conditioning in Rehab: The Scope of the Sports Physical Therapist” at 💪🏽
Had another stellar group of students and made some changes this year to include a larger focus on the return-to-sport testing side of sports rehab
This has been an extremely rewarding experience over the last two years and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue teaching
Huge thanks to all my students. I’ve already received some solid feedback for next year on how to adjust some of the material and improve on the class once again
