Torch by Cheryl Strayed

Loving the book challenge I am doing with our youngest. Intentionally spending time on things we want to be doing more of…. reading is one.

I absolutely DEVOURED Cheryl Strayed’s memoir WILD: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.
The pain and anguish she tries to escape from her mother’s death was so relatable.

So I thought I would check out her first (fiction) novel, Torch. She carries that same theme; the grief and loss of losing your mother. It is a sad read, I don’t read a ton of fiction, but it all felt so relatable again, how the family is torn apart through each of their own journeys wading through suffocating grief. Strayed’s ability to craft such an intimate view of the family characters is incredible. It read like it could have been someone’s memoir. Well honestly, this was an audio listen and it was excellent for that.
If you don’t have and use the Libby app for free audiobooks…. GET IT!
My kids teach me the coolest stuff!

BOOK #7 of 2023

What I Know For Sure, is that I have ALWAYS admired Oprah. Due to her rich and complex history growing up in the South, traumatizing events she endured as a a child, in an era at the peak of the civil rights movement, Oprah was and has been RELENTLESS at the pursuit to better her life through education and her career.

I have fond memories as a child, watching her come of age and come into herself as a beautiful and proud black woman. My mother and my aunt delighted in her transparency and vulnerability and as I grew older, I have grown to as well.

What I have come to learn is her continued drive for excellence and education, her passion for reading, and understanding the walk from someone else’s shoes as a reporter has led her to embody a quest for loving kindness and compassion for all human beings. A constant pursuit for equality in all walks of lives. Oprah embodies this message and lives it out fully.

I often wondered if she can even be relatable anymore due to her fame, power, and money. But I think she is deeply compassionate and uses her resources wisely to better our world.

The book was light and funny at times as I enjoy her humor, a fabulous audio “read” because she has a fantastic voice and is incredibly expressive. I did find a copy at the used book store that I happily added to my collection. But her writing here is also poignant, having me even take notes many times along the way. An excellent reflection. So god I spent an evening with this book. You will fly through it. A collection of essays organized by theme: joy, resilience, connection, gratitude, possibility, awe, clarity, and power. I’m inspired and curious to make note of what I personally know for sure.

BOOK #6 of 2023

Our youngest teenager Milo and I are doing a reading challenge for the year and this one we read together. I love that we connect on many levels and this is just one of them. We have been devouring books this year (i just finished book 13 and need to catch up with reviews). I have loved our conversations around all of these books and hope we read more together. It’s been a great way to connect.

Life of Pi is a fantasy adventure that explores a young boy’s spirituality, his religion, sense of self, his relationships, and ability to have both compassion and survivalism at the same time. And while reading you can’t help but explore these topics for yourself.

A critical character is the tiger (Richard Parker) that he has the most incredible and interesting relationship with on his 200+ day journey as a castaway. You can’t help but examine who are the tigers in our own lives.

We loved the book! Milo is an avid reader and this has become a favorite! 📚

It was a nice change of pace from the heavy psychology books I enjoy and read so often. I do like fiction but some is so terrible. I despise getting involved with a novel and feel as if I’ve wasted my time. But some are SOOO GOOD and I love being transported to another world.

Let me know what you have read enjoyed lately?

BOOK #5 of 2023
WHEN THE BODY SAYS NO

So relatable to me this year.
My body said NO! I was literally unable to walk for a few weeks earlier this year. My body said NO. Yup me … health coach extraordinaire who walked 1,000 miles last year has yet to walk one in 2023. My body literally said NO.
After a 7 week bout with Mono the virus attacked my joints, specifically my knees)The GOOD NEWS, things could always be worse AND I’m recovering + feeling more like myself every day. I can now do basic chores, grocery shop, + even spent a glorious evening ✨dancing the night away (what a healing event that was for me).

I also recently uncovered a Lyme infection with an integrative doc after deep testing leading to more clarity of my health journey.

I have dug into new ways of healing and this very book was a catalyst to that healing. Along with hours of talk therapy and research.

Mate offers data AND moving stories of real people (his patients) in his
research that shows emotion and psychological stress play a powerful role in the onset of chronic illness. His latest book (the Myth of Normal I’m reading now) a NYT bestseller and is BLOWING UP the way we look Trauma and it’s relation to disease.

Here’s what Mate claims….
You can’t seperate emotions from physiology. So when we repress our emotions we make ourselves sick. Specifically repressing anger.
The repression of anger begins as an attempt to be accepted (attachment) + then this becomes a pattern in your life and ultimately and unequivocally threatens your health. Repressing anger takes a huge physiological toll on the nervous system and immune system and once it becomes a pattern it will threaten health and develop disease. An analogy he uses in the book, is comparing the pattern of repressing emotions to pushing a beach ball underwater and keeping it there. Forever. Think about the effort this takes. THIS IS ME.
Textbook people pleaser.
I keep emotions to myself to not stir the pot.

I share so that you too may be awakened to psychological patterns of behavior that could be affecting your health.
This has been a mind blowing connection for me personally and I hope it offers healing to you as well ✌🏽
