Octaband LLC

Octaband LLC Octaband is a colorful, fun interactive tool which promotes physicality, individual self-expression and community-building.

The Octaband® provides a visual representation of each person as an individual and an integral member of a group. I was motivated to create the Octaband® to address the needs of a specific group of older adults with dementia whose cognitive, physical and social challenges kept them isolated. The sensory features of the Octaband® stimulated and inspired them to engage, move together and look at one

another across the circle. It is the uniqueness of each one of us and our connection to a larger whole that is manifested in the image of the Octaband® - a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts, a whole that bubbles up with synergy. This wholeness represents the inherent potential of health and well-being of each of the participants.

The Octaband is a wonderful prop to be used as a Maypole, celebrating Mayday.

In the first video below, Laura DeCesare is teaching an intergenerational group how to do the Maypole dance. We were not as quick to pick it up as her preschool children, but we had fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcifwms9daQ

I am so excited to demonstrate the Octaband, the wonderfully effective tool that I created to help people feel a sense of belonging 19 years ago. @ the Expose Dementia conference in Baltimore, March 28 and 29. Co-sponsored by Dementia Spring. It should be a wonderful conference with art, music and dance/movement therapists and people living with dementia presenting along with film makers.
