============== Why Donate Blood ? ===================
Pakistan's population in 2011 is over 187 million making it the world's sixth most-populous country. The annual requirement for blood in Pakistan is about 500,000 units. Of this, only about 215,000 units are collected from voluntary donors each year. The remaining units are collected from friends and relatives of the patients and professional blood sellers. A large percentage of professional sellers are infected with deadly diseases such as malaria, syphilis, hepatitis and HIV infection etc. When transfused, instead of saving lives, their blood often brings people closer to death.
A little awareness on our part can save lives. It is a pity that in a country of 187 million, where the total annual requirement can be met if only 0.6% of the population donate blood voluntarily , we still have to depend on blood from professional sellers. Many organizations are carrying on a movement to change this situation. You can be part of this movement too.
============= Who Can Donate Blood? ===============
Anyone who is between the ages of 18 and 60 and weighs more than 45 Kgs (if female) and 50 Kgs (if male) can donate blood. In fact donating blood is simple and easy and has significant mental, spiritual and health benefits.
========= Why There is No Harm in Blood Donation ============
On average, there are 76 milliliters of blood per kilogram of body weight in males and 66 milliliters of blood per kilogram of body weight in females. People usually need 50 milliliters of blood per kg for circulation, the rest is extra. Males have 26 milliliters of extra blood per kg of body weight, and females have 16 milliliters per kg.Thus
a man weighing 50 kgs has 50* 26 = 1300 milliliters of extra blood in his body
and
a woman weighing the same has 50*16= 800 milliliters of extra blood in her body.
350 to 400 milliliters of blood is collected during voluntary blood donation, which is less than half the amount of extra blood in our bodies.
So there is absolutely no risk of physical harm in blood donation.
============ Benefits of Donating Blood ===================
1) Blood donors can taste the priceless feeling of saving life without harming themselves in any way.
2) The quintessential message of every religion is to serve mankind. Donating blood can be one of the best ways to serve humanity, since it can mean the difference between life and death. The 32nd verse in Sura Mayeda in the Quran says, “…And if anyone saved a life it would be as if he saved the life of entire mankind.”
3) Donating blood is beneficial for health. Donating blood stimulates the bone marrow inside the body to produce new blood cells. Within two weeks of donation, sufficient cells are produced to make up for the lost blood. Donating blood three times a year increases the vitality of red blood cells.
4) A medical survey in England shows that regular blood donors frequently remain free of complex and chronic diseases. Blood donors are also at much lower risk of heart disease and heart attack.
