Back in the throes of the Fourth Trimester with my first child, I was talking to dozens, if not hundreds of moms on a weekly basis, via Instagram message. All talking about the same thing: how no one prepares you for the postpartum period, nearly as much as the prenatal period.

I was continually writing out the same message to new moms, over and over again, giving my top tips & pieces of advice, based on my professional experience as a Women's Wellness Yoga Therapist & Coach, and also a a new mom myself.

I shared this post last year, and the message still rings true, so sharing again:

While I'm forever in awe of the female body and its capacity to grow life, birth life and feed life - I must say, has been triggering for me.

I always thought I would breastfeed for at least a year, and I told everyone my grand plans to breastfeed.

And it turned out that breastfeeding was not something I was capable of, emotionally and physically.

I tried EVERYTHING, but in the end, I just knew that I had to stop torturing myself on every level.

I felt like I failed my newborn daughter for not giving her ā€œthe bestā€.

It also was a huge contributor to my & Rage, and I knew that if I was crying hysterically every time I tried to breastfeed, it was no longer worth the ā€œbondā€ I supposedly was creating.

I knew that if I wanted to survive & be the calm present mom I always wanted to be, I had to stop.

Despite knowing this was for the best, I struggled for WEEKS coming to grips with my decision to stop breastfeeding and pumping - oscillating between feeling relieved and feeling so so guilty.

And I know there are thousands of other moms out there who tried their very best to not ā€œquitā€ breastfeeding, but just could not carry on any longer.

And there are thousands of moms whose decision got ripped away from them as their baby went into NICU.

Whatever your situation might be, I know first hand the emotional rollercoaster that comes with finding closure in your breastfeeding/pumping journey.

There’s a lot of IG accounts out there that will make you believe they know better than you do when it comes to raising your child.

They feed off the insecurities a first time mom has.

I can’t tell you how many courses, products, guides I’ve bought in a moment of weakness, hoping that they would have the magic answer to all my parenting questions.

But it wasn’t until I realized that I had the answers within me along, did I start to see through all the BS.

Last night, I was on the panel for the latest Event.

I was asked to speak on how to balance business ownership with wellness.

Well, I don't think anyone needs another speech about how important self-care is and how we should be prioritizing our health & wellness.

We all know the things we ā€œshouldā€ be doing for our health, but the problem we have is prioritizing it amongst the sea of a million other obligations we have.

I spoke a lot about how business owners need to set boundaries with themselves & their business, and the importance of separating the business entity from their personal identity.

We discussed that to create sustainable change for long-lasting impact, we must start small.

So often, we try to do a complete overhaul of our routines & habits, but we end up burning out from doing too much too quickly.

If we start to make small 1% shifts in our daily routines and habits, then it's much easier to stick to. And these 1% shifts have positive compounding effects overtime.

Lastly, I finished with this prompt:

ā€œWe often think of our business/career/finance goals as the end result to achieve.

But what if YOU were the end result?

How would that change your perspective on how you spent your time & energy?

Start cultivating yourself as a whole, embodied, empowered person and see how your goals & definition of success changes."

I’m so excited to announce that my brand new THRIVE Like A Mother Program is officially launched!!Ā 

I’ve been running with and developing this idea for a little over 9 months, and I can’t wait to "birth" this baby out into the world!

You’ve probably known me up to this point as a yoga teacher, but to me, teaching yoga has always felt like a tiny fraction of what I have to offer.

After over a decade of practicing, studying & teaching with the top Wellness Leaders in the world, (and after going through the rollercoaster that is early motherhood!), I knew it was time to step into something bigger, to offer moms a better solution than the same old, same old.

I've spent the last 5 years doing a deep dive into Women's Wellness, so I thought I was at least a little prepared for motherhood…

But it really isn’t until you have your own direct experience can you truly understand the magnitude of the radical transformation motherhood is.

I created this program for the past me:

🤰 The woman finding out she was pregnant and worried she was going to have to put her dreams on hold.

🤱 The postpartum mom sitting in a nursery at midnight crying and unsure of how I was going to survive the next day.

🤯 The scattered-brained and emotionally frantic mom who couldn't trust her mind and was scared she was losing who she truly was at her core.

I created this program for the past me, knowing that it WILL help you.

This is why, from a yogic perspective, we always start with the external first.

We can not live our highest potential if we’re chronically physically feeling like šŸ’©.

For example: The end result of yoga is pure meditation (or samadhi). But we can’t sit in meditation comfortably if our back hurts, or we have the flu, or our hips are tight.

Within the system of yoga, we have the 8 Limbs that we follow. And they systemically follow the pattern of removing the external distractions to the internal distractions. Of cleansing and purifying the external environment to the internal environment.

Because the ancient yogis knew… ain’t nobody gonna be sitting in meditation for hours if their stomachs in knots from eating unhealthy & their breath is too shallow to breathe deeply.

Does that make sense?!

This is why in all of my coaching (and the entire framework of Thrive Like A Mother) is based on this external to internal transformation.

We work on the body, revitalizing, connecting, & reenergizing. Once the body feels radiant & on-fire, then we have the capacity to look at the inner work of stabilizing our emotions & focusing our . When the body is functioning optimally & the mind/emotions are stable & clear, then we can access our heart, our purpose, our passion and really start to see a clear vision of the life we want to lead.

But it all starts with the body. Like .vitti said, when women’s bodies don’t thrive (particularly when we stop paying attention to the intelligence of the body), it’s nearly impossible to live to our highest potential.

Which is a disservice to the entire world.

If you’re reading this and thinking, Hmm I feel pretty good, but I know I could feel better.

Or maybe you just can’t turn off all the noise & distractions around you and within you, and you’re not living up to your highest potential reality.

I get it, because I’ve been there.

āœŒļøOut, I’m outta here šŸ‘‹

My husband, Sam, and I are on our way to a 7-Day Baby-Free Holiday to the Dominican Republic.

We're taking the next week to unplug from tech & work and connect with our passions of travel, scuba diving & adventure. And perhaps a bit of relaxation in between!

Without a doubt, the number one question I get from people when I say I'm leaving for 7 days without my daughter is…

ā€œWell then who's staying with the baby? You're going to miss her!ā€

Of course, I'll miss her. But there's a big difference between missing your fam while you're away and feeling guilty about taking time for yourself.

I've been away from Leila many times since she was born. Travel is one of my biggest passions. It lights me up inside, it makes me a better woman, wife & mom.

Although I've loved the trips I've taken with her so far & look forward to taking her on adventures around the world, sometimes you just need some time to yourself. And that's OKAY.

I've thought a lot about why I don't feel guilty for taking a 7-day holiday baby-free (or any of my other trips thus far for that matter.) A lot of moms wouldn't even consider leaving for that long because they would feel too guilty.

And it's made me consider… ā€œIs the guilt you carry actually yours; Or are you conditioned to assume the feelings of guilt, lest you be a ā€˜bad mom’?ā€

In other words… Do you actually feel guilty? Or do you think you ā€œshouldā€ feel guilty because society says you should?

There's not right or wrong answer here. It's just important to consider where you hold guilt or shame and notice whether it's actually yours to carry.

You might find you feel a whole lot freer when you realize… it's usually not yours in the first place.

I'm signing off for the next 10 days, and am excited to come back feeling recharged, refreshed and ready to be the best mom I can be. (AND ready to launch our Thrive Like A Mother Program in February!)

I hope over the next 10 days you can do something for yourself that lights you up, and that you can do it completely guilt-free.

Caught the first light of 2022 ā˜€ļø

My intention for this year is to lean into ease & play and allowing more room for flexibility in my life.

And I’m being tested of this intention almost immediately.

When you have a strong connection to source/universe/god, it almost makes you laugh when adverse situations come up. Bc the universe is like… oh you want to cultivate XYZ? Here you go, have at it! šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

I’m grateful for the cellular reset I received at the beach this morning. I’m grateful I have the support at home to have moments like this to myself, even when little Lei was up at 4 and sick.

I’m ready to step into 2022 with a more playful, easeful perspective ā¤ļøšŸ„° I’m ready to say yes to myself first, business second. So I can better serve my clients & community.

We can’t control what 2022 will bring. But we can control how we respond.

With that said, I’m taking the next 2 days off this amazing platform of global & creative connection so I can be present with my family.

BIG TRUTH: If you can see it, it’s already happened. You just have to get yourself out of the way.

{SAVE} for when you have a spare moment today to reflect.

I encourage you to find some time today or tomorrow to write your 2022 Vision. I learned this practice from a VP at Facebook in Sydney, Australia when I used to work there.

I've been following this exercise for the last 4 years and it is WILD to look back on it each year and see how much I had grown, how much my priorities shifted in the year, and no matter how much my plans fell through or changed, the universe always redirected me in a more aligned way.

This practice is super beneficial in so many ways. It allows you to see & more importantly FEEL how you want the new year to unfold. Of course, there is room for flexibility, and that's why it's important to lean more into how you want to FEEL, rather than super strict goals & timelines.

It's also a really beautiful practice year-on-year to reflect & read the letter you wrote to yourself last year, and actually reflect on how much of it you brought into your life.

I'll be writing mine today, and I encourage you to carve out some time yourself to do the same. Even if you never even think about it again for the rest of year, you wrote it into existence now. And that’s enough!

ā€œMinimum dose, maximum result.ā€

My personal trainer says this all the time and it has really stuck with me every day.

We often think that we need to do more, train more, be more in order to get the results we want.

Especially in the Yoga/Wellness/Spirituality space.

We always want the the next biggest thing, the most challenging practice, the biggest emotional release.

But the truth of the matter is… none of those practices (you know, the ones that blow your mind wide open or make you so damn exhausted from a heated challenging Asana practice)… none of that is sustainable.

To see real, life changing, long-lasting shifts in your life, you have to practice every day.

And to practice every day, we need something simple & sustainable, while still being effective.

The Minimum dose that yields maximum results.

For me, that’s my Kriya Meditation practice. My teacher .breadner passed down this practice nearly 5 years ago. And every time I train with him, the practice gets more refined, more simple but even more effective because I can do it every day.

I carry this sentiment in my heart daily now. How can I get the maximum results with the minimum amount of effort?

And every time it goes back to sustainable practices for me.

Meditation, walking, nutrition, sleep & supplements.

That’s my daily dose.
