Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Research Institute (VARI) recently hosted an interactive discussion with eminent researchers: Dr C. V. Krishnan, PhD, a distinguished BARC scientist and Professor at Stony Brook University; Dr Ramachandran Thekkedath, PhD, former CUSAT Vice Chancellor and medtech pioneer who developed the worldโs first laser angioplasty system; and Dr Usha Thekkedath, MD, Program Director for Surgical Innovations at UCSF and Director of the UCSF-Stanford Pediatric Device Consortium. The interaction focused on elucidating the fundamental scientific principles underlying Ayurvedic philosophy, with particular emphasis on the rationale behind diverse dosage-delivery systems in Ayurveda, drawing from the ongoing research activities at Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Research Institute (VARI).
The discussion highlighted how classical formulationsโKashaya (decoctions), Churna (powders), Gulika/Vati (tablets), Ghrita (medicated ghee), Taila (medicated oils), and AsavaโArishta (fermented formulations)โare thoughtfully designed to enhance bioavailability, enable targeted therapeutic action, influence pharmacokinetic behavior, and improve clinical efficacy, offering valuable insights for integrative and transdisciplinary research. The presence of Vaidyaratnam Managing Director Dr. E. T. Neelakandhan Mooss and Executive Directors Dr. Yadu Narayanan Mooss and Dr. E. T. Krishnan Mooss added great value to the deliberations.
Dr. Sheela Kaaralam B (Chief Scientist & HeadโTechnical Services), Dr. Ashi Augustine (Deputy HeadโR&D), Dr. Asish G R (Principal Scientist), Mr. Anish John (Senior Scientist), and the VARI team shared ongoing research initiatives and future directions.
The interaction opened promising avenues for collaborative work in integrative medicine and transdisciplinary research.
