After a full day of training at ANNA’s Advocacy Forum, 80+ ANNA members nurses are ready to take their voices to the Hill tomorrow! 💪🩺

They’ve learned how to share their stories, advocate for key policy priorities, and build lasting relationships with lawmakers. From workforce challenges to dialysis innovation, they’re bringing expertise, humanity, and heart to every conversation.

"You are the expert." That was the powerful reminder from ANNA’s Health Policy Consultant, Jim Twaddell, as he prepped our nephrology nurse advocates for meetings on Capitol Hill. Jim shared a few key tips for successful legislative visits:

✔️ Lead with the ask: “I’m here today to ask you about…”
✔️ Remember—staffers take 12–13 meetings a day. Be clear and direct from the start so they can focus on your message.
✔️ Make it personal: connect the issue to your own story and why it matters to you and your patients.
✔️ It's your right - Advocating for change is both a privilege and a powerful way to use your voice—as a nurse and as an American!

His message was clear—this isn’t just a meeting. It’s a conversation. And the people in those offices are paid to listen and take your concerns up the chain.

At the ANNA Advocacy Forum, we were glad to welcome Michelle Seger from the Alliance for Home Dialysis—an organization ANNA is proud to be a part of.

She shared just some of Alliance’s past and ongoing work to improve access to home dialysis and discussed key priorities, including:

📱 Telehealth advancements, including continued support for audio-only visits, remote patient monitoring, and digital tools for home patients
💉 More frequent home hemodialysis — ensuring MACs don’t block patient access to this critical option
📚 Early kidney disease education to help patients make informed choices about home modalities
🩺 CKD and ESKD screening — urging CMS to incentivize screenings in primary care for earlier diagnosis and better outcomes
🌪️ Disaster preparedness — proposing virtual stockpiles, vendor-managed buffer stock, and prioritized medical supply deliveries during emergencies

We appreciate Michelle’s insights and the Alliance’s tireless work on behalf of patients, providers, and the nephrology community.

Join ANNA's Administration Specialty Practice Network (SPN) and connect with nurses in administration and all nephrology sub-specialties—because every area of practice has an administrative perspective! Engage in discussions on regulation, infection control, staffing models, recruitment, staff development, financial considerations, continuing education, legal aspects, and more.

The ADM SPN has presented topics like work-life balance, nurse engagement, communication styles, generational nursing, legal documentation, and coping with patient loss in dialysis units. SPN advisors typically contribute 4-5 hours/month, while SPN leaders dedicate 8-10 hours/month.
