MiA - Mindfulness in Arabic Aiming to facilitate the Healing of Arabic-speaking Refugees through the Present Body-Mind. Trauma Sensitive Mindfulness

ToWo group and MiA are passionate about Mindfulness in Arabic, an online project of Trauma Sensitive Mindfulness courses in the Arabic language, made available freely, for refugees and their counselors. The violent situation in the Middle East and the outpouring of displaced people and refugees from Syria and the Arab countries were a strong call to create Mindfulness meditations in Arabic. Refuge

e Aid workers in Turkey and Canada, Palestinian women in the West Bank, Druze women in the Galilee, German refugee center counselors, and social workers in Baharain, have all insisted that Mindfulness practices like this are imperative in Arabic. As it is vital to practice mindfulness in a language one is comfortable and native at,, translating mindfulness exercises into Arabic became ever more important. Mindfulness is known to manage stress and support decision making, clarity and flexibility. Mindfulness can ease transitions, lighten emotional burdens, and oil communication. A volunteer-based group comprised of women from different faiths, ToWo works coed with the Refugees themselves. The project is based on the basic premise that trauma robs us of the present moment, and healing occurs in the present body-mind. The first meditations were shared with social workers working with wounded Syrians in a hospital setting, and now almost 9000 refugees and counselors havecapproached us globally over the net...
only 4 years after! It seems that managing the epidemic and the stress around it - brought more people to listen to our meditations!

** We wish for donations and/or grants to create a facilitator training! And a kids course in Arabic has been requested by the communities.

** Inshalla, as we say here, with the grace of the cosmos. **

Stay tuned!

A charming invitation to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness can support us in these stormy painful times to do some inner alchemy work, so that our cups will be holding softness and clarity.
So that even when bumped against the spill will not continue the hurt.

May we be able to support with ease.

I LOVE THIS ANALOGY:
You are holding a cup of coffee when someone comes along and bumps into you or shakes your arm, making you spill your coffee everywhere.
Why did you spill the coffee?
"Because someone bumped into me!!!"
Wrong answer.
You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup.
Had there been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea.
Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out.
Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen), whatever is inside you will come out. It's easy to fake it, until you get rattled.
So we have to ask ourselves... “what's in my cup?"
When life gets tough, what spills over?
Joy, gratitude, peace and humility?
Anger, bitterness, victim mentality and quitting tendencies?
Life provides the cup, YOU choose how to fill it.
Today let's work towards filling our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, joy, words of affirmation, resilience, positivity; and kindness, gentleness and love for others.

Poem: For Warmth . Thich Nhat Hanh
Published in December 2001

I hold my face in my two hands.
No, I am not crying.
I hold my face in my two hands
to keep the loneliness warm—
two hands protecting,
two hands nourishing,
two hands preventing
my soul from leaving me
in anger.

by Thich Nhat Hanh , written after the bombing of Ben Tre, Vietnam when an American military man made the comment, "We had to destroy the town in order to save it."
Call Me By My True Names (Berkeley: Parallax Press, 1999)
