“👉 Contrary to previous beliefs, the ACL does have the capacity to heal on its own WITHOUT surgery.
👉 This was shown in this lovely paper, where 102 patients with ruptured ACLs underwent rehabilitation with no surgery. What they found was that more than 80% of these ruptured ACLs had healed.
👉 Now this isn’t saying that surgery is no longer needed. In this same study, those who were of a younger age tended to have more severe injuries and did not see a recovery rate as high as their older counterparts.
👉 Surgical management of ACL ruptured have their place, however it is unfortunate it has taken this long for people to realise that not every torn ACL requires surgery.
