While many of us look forward to the holiday season and the change in routines, the holiday season can be an especially challenging time for autistic people and their families. The Indiana Resource Center for Autism - Indiana University came up with 5 simple ways you can help accomodate neurodivergent people during the holidays, but we think these are great strategies to use year round as well.

What else would you add to this list?

With different holidays just around the corner, let’s think about ways we can accommodate our loved ones this holiday season. Here are 5 ideas that we at the IRCA came up with.

Five ways to accommodate autistic loved ones during the holidays:

1. Keep your routine the same as much as possible.

2. Let them know the plan ahead of time and stick to it.

3. Create calming spaces for recharging alone.

4. Offer shared actives that don’t require small talk.

5. Provide safe foods during family meals. (And please don’t comment on what is or isn’t on their plate!)

🎃 Halloween Fun in Monticello! 👻

Our Monticello superheroes had a fantastic Halloween! Our dedicated leadership team organized a variety of fun activities for both staff and clients alike- spooky drinks, cookie decorating, and pumpkin painting! Our clients got to practice their trick or treating skills before heading out that evening with their families and ended the day with a pumpkin experiment.

🎃 Halloween Fun in Lebanon! 👻

We had a spooktacular time celebrating Halloween this year! Our staff and clients showed off their incredible creativity with some amazing costumes. From Halloween Classics such as pumpkins and skeletons to new favorites like K-Pop Demon Hunters, the day was filled with joy, sensory-friendly fun, and lots of smiles.

Join us in celebrating the many accomplishments of our recent graduate, Brayden. While attending Piece by Piece, Brayden's caring personality, silly sense of humor, and infectious smile brightened every room of our Monticello clinic. Brayden worked very hard and mastered over 2,000 individual skills during his time with us. We are so proud of him and excited for the next step in his journey.

Brayden's mom had a special message as well:

"I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for giving my son everything he needed/needs to thrive. You all have truly given me an entirely different child and y'all have improved the quality of life in our household. I'm so thankful for the bonds he created with all of you and I'm very sad that he has to part from you guys. :( But you all should be so proud of the success you achieved on Brayden's journey.
