⭐️ How to keep your vitamin D levels steady all year

☀️ With all the sunshine lately, vitamin D might be the last thing on your mind, but did you know there’s a way to sustain your levels in winter as well as supplements?

One of our favourite health experts, Dr. Rhonda Patrick - whose deep dives into the science behind health and longevity we love - just shared something super interesting:

👉 Just 1 hour of INDOOR aerobic exercise can increase active vitamin D levels by 35%! 🤯

Vitamin D is stored in the body's fat tissue. In people with higher body fat, vitamin D tends to get 'stuck' in fat tissue, making blood levels look low, even if the body is storing enough.

🌥️ Add in winter (with less sunlight and less natural vitamin D), and you’ve got a recipe for deficiency.

But here’s the good news:

A study found that about 160 minutes of mixed-intensity exercise a week (that’s just over 20 mins a day) completely prevented the usual winter drop in active vitamin D.

Even better? Exercise didn’t just release vitamin D from fat - it actually helped the body metabolise it better.

A new study has shown that caffeine can influence our brain's activity while we sleep - so even if you fall asleep fine, you’re not necessarily getting a decent night’s rest 😴 .

Here’s why:

💤 Disruption of REM sleep - The research showed drinking coffee late in the day can reduce the amount of REM (Rapid eye movement) sleep - essential for cognitive function, emotional regulation, and memory - and leave you feeling groggy the next day.

🧠 Altered brain processing - caffeine also changes how our brains process information during sleep, which could impact on cognition and learning.

🔄 Memory Consolidation - a late night latte might also interfere with the brain's ability to consolidate memories while we rest, potentially affecting how well we remember things the next day.

But before you ditch your after-dinner coffee, it’s worth noting that the impact of caffeine varies depending on your age, with younger adults more likely to experience significant disruptions in REM sleep 💤 . Older people are generally less affected, potentially due to slower metabolism and changes in brain function 🤔.

Our Story

Sadie, our founder was diagnosed with ME/CFS in 2012 and later with Lyme disease. Her ill health meant she had no choice but to stop working, close her software company in Hong Kong and move back to the UK.

She spent years using various holistic interventions to regain her health, from diet to ozone therapy and many things in between. Each had a positive impact on her wellbeing, finally culminating in an ability and a need to, ‘Do something other than being ill!’

PatchMD vitamin patches from the USA were one of the successful interventions, but they weren’t readily available in the UK/EU, so in 2018 she founded PatchWorks UK and now imports them to sell this side of The Pond.
