Patient: what is Asthma?
Me: Asthma is a long-term (chronic) condition that affects the airways in the lungs, making it hard to breathe. It causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms like:
Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing)
Coughing, especially at night or early morning
Shortness of breath
Chest tightness
Patient: what can trigger Asthma?
Me: Asthma symptoms can be triggered by:
Dust, smoke, strong smells
Cold air or exercise
Allergens like pollen, pets, or mold
Respiratory infections (e.g., colds or flu)
Stress or strong emotions
Patient: Who can get asthma?
Me: Asthma can affect children and adults. It may run in families, especially if there’s a history of allergies or asthma.
Patient: Is it curable?
Me: There is no cure, but with proper management, people with asthma can live normal, active lives.
Patient: How is Asthma managed?
Me: Avoid triggers
Use inhalers:
Relievers (e.g., salbutamol) for quick relief during attacks
Controllers (e.g., corticosteroids) to reduce airway inflammation
Follow your asthma action plan
Regular check-ups with your doctor
Know when to seek help
Call the emergency line when:
Breathing becomes very difficult
The reliever inhaler doesn’t help
Lips or fingers turn blue
Stay informed, avoid triggers, and take your medications regularly. With the right care, asthma doesn’t have to control your life.
Enjoy your weekend!
