How to help improve your DIGESTIVE health!

Sometimes even when you have all the good intentions of staying on track and keeping your routine this doesn’t quite go to plan, and thats OK. We have some good tips for you on how to stay in control, ensuring that your digestion doesn’t go off track too much and cause that all too common bloat.

Our digestive system (gastrointestinal system or ‘gut’) is essentially a long tube that runs from our mouth to our a**s. It encompasses the stomach, small intestine and large intestine, and accessory organs- the pancreas, liver and gallbladder. It also incorporates the gut microbiome- an ecosystem of microbes (predominantly bacteria) living in our large intestine.

The primary role of the digestive system is the break down of food into macro and micro nutrients, and the subsequent absorption of these nutrients into the body. The digestive system is also one of the main elimination pathways for toxins that get bound up in the stool to be excreted. Healthy bowel habits are therefore an essential part of excreting unwanted waste and toxins.

How to help;

- Focus of whole foods
- Include plenty of fibre
- Eat the rainbow
- Stay hydrated
- Try fermented foods

These are only a few ways you can ensure your helping your gut out. Some even more simple tools we have found that have really helped with digestion are actually not nutritional tips but rather actions which can be really easily incorporated in your day to day lives.

- Eating and chewing your food properly. Take longer to enjoy your food and savour each bite.
- Take a few deep breaths before eating.
- Movement stimulates movements. Your body needs gentle movement through out the day to help support digestion, blood flow and detoxification. This could be a light walk, gentle stretching/ Qi gong.
- Sitting up straight at a table.
- Try to not be on a screen/ distracted. Try putting all electrical devises in a different room while you are eating.
- Try being mindful of what you are eating, try to make sure you know all the ingredients are in your meal.

These may seem like very simple tips however they can make a huge difference to our digestion.
