Clamfest!
Many of our attendings live in one of the neighboring towns, Yarmouth. A classic summertime tradition since 1965, the Yarmouth Clam Festival brings the community (and attendings) together for seafood, games, and a good time!

What has MMC ED been up to? Kickball of course!

Here at Maine Med, we have such a strong sense of community in the ED! We love coming together as a team, both in the department, as well as on the kickball field!
This past week, our incredible nurses coordinated a department wide hang, complete with an epic bracket-based kickball showdown!

Journal Club Highlight ✨
Here at Maine Med, we kick off every year's journal club with a book that highlights one of our program's core values- this year, we talked about Rough Sleepers, a powerful story about Dr. Jim and his dedication to the unhoused population of Boston.
This journal club was hosted at one of our local favorites, Fort Williams Park, home to Maine's oldest lighthouse.
Can't get better than meaningful conversations and beautiful Maine summers!

Ladies Pool Day ✨
A lovely day spent bonding between the women in our department

One of the most invaluable aspects of our residency is the mentorship and community our program creates. We have such a rad group of female attendings who highlight the balance of professional development, dedication to their community, as well as balancing extra-curricular activities (kids and family, bike rides, fishing and island life, pets). They are truly role models for so many of our female residents!

WELCOME INTERNS!!
Each year, our residency kicks off the new year and welcoming our interns with a boat ride out to our program director, Casey MacVane's, home on Cliff Island. Spending the day connecting over grilling, the best island ice cream, yard games, and a communal ocean jump is a sure fire way to connect and make lasting memories.
Welcome to the family!!

Elective Spotlight!
📍Denali, Alaska
One of our incredible PGY3's (soon to be amazing attending), Peter Quayle, shares his experience during an austere elective in Denali.

Last spring I spent my elective with the Denali Climbing Rangers through the National Park Service in Alaska. During my month on Denali, I practiced high-altitude and wilderness emergency medicine in one of the most remote and stunning environments imaginable. From treating frostbite, HAPE, and HACE to managing traumatic injuries and coordinating emergent helicopter evacuations, this experience was a powerful mix of medicine, mountains, and mission-driven teamwork. I feel so lucky to have been part of the search and rescue operations that help keep climbers safe on North America’s highest peak and connect my love for the mountains with my professional training.

At MMC, our residents have two months of elective time (one during PGY2, one during PGY3) to harness and delve into medicine in a way that feels most authentic to them. What an amazing opportunity!

A recent sim session! Our faculty spend countless hours creating high-fidelity simulations, high-yield simulated procedures, and cases to review in addition to our regularly scheduled didactics. We are grateful for them and their expertise!

Look at this fine crew!!! It’s class picture day! They grow up so fast… 🥲Very proud of these AMAZING doctors for a phenomenal year. It is sad to see our graduating seniors leaving us (minus our chiefs who are staying for fellowship 🤠). But, it is very exciting to see our rising PGY2s and PGY3s about to step up to their new roles. 💪🏼
