The Canary System by Quantum Dental Technologies

The Canary System by Quantum Dental Technologies The Canary System™ is a revolutionary tool for the detection of early tooth decay to promote non-invasive healing instead of drilling and filling!

The Canary uses a low-power, pulsating laser light to scan teeth for the presence of dental caries or tooth decay. The laser light is absorbed by the tooth and two phenomena are observed: the laser light is converted into a form of fluorescence (luminescence) and converted into heat (less than 1 degree Celsius). This increase in heat will not harm the tooth but gives us important information on the tooth up to a depth of 5 mm below the surface. Simultaneous collection of the re-emitted heat and light provides us with information on the presence and extent of tooth decay below the tooth surface.

Just gave a "virtual" lecture last Tuesday at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry on "Caries: The Disease You Will Treat for the Rest of Your Professional Career". Part of the lecture involved presenting the students with the need to ask WHY. The critical question for determining what caused a particular problem and how to solve and improve the patient's oral health.

Honoured to be one of Dentistry Today's Leaders in Continuing Education. Currently, I am involved in looking at the linkages between adverse childhood events and enamel malformation. I am also involved with a group of colleagues looking at the design and implementation of Canada's National Dental Program.

it's not simply a cracked tooth but an indication of stress. If we find one cracked tooth there are typically other teeth that have cracks due to clenching / grinding and bruxism. The Canary System is the accurate diagnostic tool for detecting cracks and treating them before the tooth fractures. We need to look beyond the tooth and assess the health of the patient and help them to understand what stress is doing to their body.

In June 2020, Dr. Stephen Abrams got a call from a patient saying that she cracked a tooth. But when he started asking questions, Abrams realized something more was going on. Learn how he helped in this episode of What's on My Chair.

Cracked teeth are a sign of a greater problem in patients. Research shows that the added stress of the pandemic is leading patients to clench and grind their teeth at higher rates. I spent the time discussing with my patients to see how they’re coping with COVID-19. We also used The Canary System to detect the cracks that X-Rays and visual exams are missing. When a tooth is cracked, the teeth surrounding it are impacted as well, which can cause major problems. For more information check out the interview here:

The stress of dealing with COVID has really had an impact on dental patients. A large number of people are seeking treatment for cracked teeth or cusps caused by clenching and grinding. Grinding and clenching does not affect only one tooth. The Canary System can find cracks on neighbouring teeth that require treatment. If found early, one can avoid a disaster. Other caries systems (including x-rays) find this a challenge as they are not detecting & measuring defects below the tooth surface.

Dr. Stephen Abrams is a dentist in Toronto, he is also the creator of The Canary System a revolutionary system to detect changes in the crystalline structure of dental enamel. This allows us to detect early decay, enamel dysplasia and even early fractures which are undetectable using conventional di...

I was very surprised by the number of patients we have seen in the last few weeks with fractured teeth. As part of my examination, I use The Canary System to examine the teeth adjacent to and opposing the fractured tooth. This helps us provide a very comprehensive treatment. We also consider placing bite splints to help deal with the clenching and grinding.
