Understanding Fatty Liver Disease: A Brief Overview
Fatty liver disease, a condition characterised by the accumulation of excess fat in liver cells, has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. This silent yet potentially serious health issue affects millions of people worldwide, often without their knowledge. The disease can be broadly categorised into two types: alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
AFLD, as the name suggests, is primarily caused by excessive alcohol consumption. On the other hand, NAFLD is associated with factors such as obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. Both forms of fatty liver disease can progress to more severe conditions if left untreated, including inflammation, scarring, and even liver failure.
