The documentary “Long-Time Sun” complements two other documentaries that expose the abuses and crimes hidden for over fifty years within Yogi Bhajan’s realm of Kundalini Yoga and Sikh Dharma: VICE's “True Believers” and HBO Max’s “Breath of Fire”.

“Long Time Sun” features a carefully selected video and photographic footage that showcases Yogi Bhajan’s teachings from the early days and reflects the cultural climate of the time, offering clearer insight into the cult’s origins. For example, it includes a video clip in which a member of the American Congress defends the resolution honoring Yogi Bhajan after his passing. The contrast with the horrific testimonies of first- and second-generation survivors is striking. I interpreted this as an implicit call to amend that resolution, as we suggested in “Under the Yoga Mat."

The documentary effectively illustrates the complex and challenging intergenerational relationships.

How did I witness the leaders of Yogi Bhajan's 3HO Kundalini Yoga organization react to the massive revelations of sexual and child abuse and other misconduct that have come to light since 2020? How did survivors respond to the “reparations” offered? Does this community, which still includes thousands worldwide, show similarities to the cult characteristics defined by cult expert Dr. Steven Hassan?
This book addresses these questions and highlights how Yogi Bhajan's teachings continue to be propagated by those who willfully ignore or deny the abuse to protect their yoga or healing business. At eleven she was sent to a boarding school in India with a one-way ticket because there was no money for a return ticket. She had to care for a six-year-old on the trip while in shock herself. There was no swimming pool or horses as promised. There was filth, lice, hunger, and loneliness ... no one to talk to, no way to call home ... Kundalini Yogis, listen to this story (and others) ... The benefits of Kirtan Kriya, a meditation in Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga that uses the ‘mantra’ Sa Ta Na Ma are praised by "The Alzheimer Research and Prevention Foundation". A paragraph in my forthcoming book, “The CULTISH Nature of Kundalini Yoga, 3HO & Sikh Dharma,” reveals a scientist’s view on this research and more info about this foundation and its misleading information. MahanKirn’s testimony about the first time Yogi Bhajan r**ed her (in the 3rd episode of “Breath of Fire”) is heartbreaking. For 25 years, she kept saying that she never saw anything unusual as his personal healer. She kept protecting him.
Shiv Charan’s wife's video reaction to the book Premka is shameful: “These allegations do not change the way I see Yogi Bhajan.” He sits next to her, affirming. (Shiv Charan heads Karam Kriya School, one of Europe's most popular Kundalini Yoga places.)
The documentarians did a great job in portraying Harijiwan’s role and criminal past so clearly (I wonder if he's still hiding) and bringing to light Bhajan’s quotes, “Rape is always invited,” and much more.
I am happier than ever that we wrote "Under the Yoga Mat" with the help of many survivors because, together, these resources will one day bring the truth to light, make people think about the not-so-innocent practice of Kundalini Yoga, and ensure that justice prevails.
