Kay Slater Yoga I am a certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT), yoga instructor (E-RYT500) and golf lover. A simple yoga practice can help. I can’t wait to share it with you.

I offer yoga therapy, private yoga instruction for individuals and groups and TPI Golf Fitness Assessments. I love helping others and most golfers appreciate anything that improves their time on the course. I attended my first Hatha yoga class in 2002. Yoga has been a part of my life, in some way, ever since. As a trauma informed yoga instructor, compassion (karuna in Sanskrit, embodied in 1.33 of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali) is the foundation of my approach to yoga. When we start moving our bodies, gentle yoga is a great place to start. Gentle, however, does not necessarily mean "easy" yoga. Your gentle yoga practice can be physically and mentally challenging. I believe all yoga should be done with compassion and respect for your "today" body, mind and spirit. Find, and accept with gratitude, your best practice for today. In November 2021, I completed my 900-hour Yoga Therapy Certification training with the Surya Chandra Yoga Healing School. Studying Yoga Therapy with JJ Gormley, the faculty of SCHYS, and my co-trainees was a journey of learning and healing beyond anything I could have anticipated. The International Association of Yoga Therapist (IAYT) definition of yoga therapy “is the professional application of the principles of yoga to promote health and well-being within a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management, and yoga practices for individuals or small groups.” You can learn more by visiting www.yogatherapy.health. You are your best teacher and healer — always. Together we will assess where you are and explore tools of yoga that may be helpful for you. Helping you cultivate the best relationship you can have with yourself is my main goal.

Anytime is a good time for a TPI Assessment. With results to share with your golf professional, a custom fitness plan is created. Often simple additions within your pre- and post-play routines can make a big difference.
The two most common takeaways during a TPI Assessment are a new awareness of movement patterns and the necessity for maintaining core strength.

C-IAYT recertification complete.
Wrapping up 2024. A year that was full of all the things.
Counting every blessing. Gratitude for support through the dips.

Blessings to all for a prosperous and healthy New Year in 2025.

Streamlining all things business, I am closing my website in January and will migrate much of that information to my pages on Facebook and Instagram. Still seeing a few clients privately. If I can help with anything, please reach out. If you just need a new set of ears to listen, please reach out.

All of my love,
Kay

I still love working with kids and teens, customizing yoga sessions with their athletic pursuits. Enjoyed yoga last night with the WAHS Varsity Soccer team.

Golf, softball, baseball, running, lacrosse, swim, now soccer. It is a privilege to work with clients that "stretch" (a little yoga humor) my skills and learning as a yoga therapist and teacher.

Your yoga practice should bring pleasantness.

Yoga should not hurt. One of Krishnamacharya’s repeated statements to me on asana was, “Practice in a way that does not cause any pain.” Bhagavan Patanjali himself says that asana should bring sukha—pleasantness. There is a difference between challenge and pain. You can challenge yourself, but do it wisely. Hurting your body is not the way to gain insights or find freedom.

Many practitioners of yoga pursue extreme positions at the cost of body pain. This is not hatha yoga. Hatha yoga is not force that causes pain. It is the use of physical effort, of body and breath, to create restraint and thereby bring stillness. In raja yoga we cultivate that effort principally in the mind. If there is pain, you will not have stillness; your body and mind will become disturbed.

This is a very simple rule: do not cause pain through asana. Find a way to move and breathe without unnecessary discomfort. That is your first and most important challenge. Only then should you take on other challenges.

900-hour, 3 year, Yoga Therapist certification complete. The learning continues. I am deeply grateful to so many that have supported, loved, listened and encouraged me through this journey. Greg, Eddie, my faithful yoga study partner, Greta, mom/papa, Karen, and a few special sistars⭐️; JJ Gormley and the amazing SCHYS faculty; my co-trainees; friends and family that helped me with 150 practicum hours; and even more courageous friends that volunteered for sessions in front of our group on virtual and in-person training weekends. “To be a good fisherman you must detach yourself from the dream of the fish. This makes whatever is caught or found a treasure.” - Mark Nepo

Vagus Nerve study has been part of my curriculum at SCHYS.
I incorporate VN toning in my daily yoga practice, and most of my yoga classes and yoga therapy sessions.

Once you know a little about the science behind the vagus nerve, it is eye opening to understand how yoga supports this health, and what yogis have known for thousands of years.

Physicians as far back as the Roman Empire have been grappling with how the vagus nerve impacts bodily function. We’ve now learned that simple movement and breath exercises can be done at home to manually stimulate the vagus nerve in times of stress to trigger the body’s natural relaxation response. And for patients with conditions ranging from epilepsy to rheumatoid arthritis to Crohn’s disease, electronic vagus nerve stimulation is offering hope and showing long-term results. The power of the vagus nerve lies in its ability to impact physical and emotional conditions that have proven to be difficult to treat with traditional drug and medical interventions. The hype is now consensus; the future of medicine and self-care will be interwoven with our understanding of the vagus nerve and how it works.

My Story

Karuna means compassion and is the foundation of my approach to yoga. Gentle yoga does not necessarily mean "easy" yoga -- your gentle yoga practice can be physically and mentally challenging. I believe all yoga should be done with compassion and respect for your "today" body, mind and spirit. Find, and accept with gratitude, your best practice for today. My key elements for practice -- Slow down. Keep it simple. Have fun. Whether I'm teaching a gentle hatha yoga class, a sport specialty yoga class for golfers, a yoga and relaxation class for elementary aged kids or a story time yoga class for preschoolers, these elements are woven throughout the practice. Inspiration is everywhere and I learn something new from every yoga student I encounter.
