Last lift of the year. Excited to feel mostly good, move mostly fast and to keep exploring.

Excited to see what 2026 has in store for all my current and future AAFY folks. Bucket head included

I haven’t full sn**ched In maybe 6-8 months and this was the first time over 135 in probably 8-12 months.

I’ll admit there is no specific utility that full sn**ching provides that another lift couldn’t. It does not uniquely make me more powerful, does not uniquely make me better at jiu jitsu, does not make me jump higher.

On top of it all, it takes a lot of prep work for my body to feel good doing it. So why include it?

I just freakin like doing it. I like moving fast, I like the technique, and I like the feeling of hitting a good lift.

I Think in today’s fitness atmosphere we forget that it’s ok to chase inane things solely for fun. Now we need to identify that you’re doing it for fun and not confuse any activity with some magic purpose.

This is where I believe good coaching is irreplaceable. Have those conversations, be ok with chasing things that matter, have a plan that fits you

And yes before any of my strong friends or weak friends chime in I know it’s not ok to have yellows as my base plate

One of my favorite pain management/deload strategies is for sure novelty.

It’s easier then you think even for most injured athletes to find a pattern that they don’t usually do and feels ok. This allows a good locus of control and a general systemic training stimulus

For me: I was just beat, 8 weeks of compound slow lifts actually caught up with me. So we swapped for a novel hinge motion. It’s lighter, a varied loading position and a varied range of motion. Felt like a “good” workout but also just not as hard this week which is what I needed

185 for tbe muscle sn**ch/power sn**ch to finish the block. Hilarious that the muscle sn**ch was easier?

This hasn’t been the best block for building strength. A little extra time coaching kids, holidays etc. But as long as I can muscle sn**ch 1.5 bodyweight I feel ok about selling sports performance services

Old guy training tip - lift something quickly every week.

Right now all my Olympic complexes start with a muscle sn**ch or muscle clean. If you can muscle it you can just about guarantee the subsequent reps will fall into true speed zones. And it’s an easier entry point from a mobility standpoint.

Besides that I am also convinced a 1RM muscle sn**ch is the king of old guy strength metrics

Contact/collision sport coaches: what are we telling our athletes? We all coach these tough sports because at some point they really positively impacted our lives.

I am curious though what is delivery? Do we need to be tough and disciplined to@achieve the best results? Is there room for keeping it light and fun yet still achieving high results?

How are you keeping kids engaged and participating in the toughest sports? Has your approach changed over the years?

Don’t over think it. Pick a progression and make small wins .
5 weeks ago my 6x6 was 225-255-280-305-315-315. That was week one of a 4 week build. I didn’t overthink it, im just doing it again a bit heavier.

This go round 235-265-290-310-325-330. Lift a few more pounds, lift the same weight faster, lift the same weight with more speed, decrease the rest interval.

A lot of times any simple change can keep the stimulus fresh and useful. If you don’t have a plan, or need some organization to your training shoot me a message

I’m not going to say I have this whole parenting and coaching thing figured out. But I do feel like coaching more youth recently has clarified and solidified some core beliefs on the subject. Both from a psychological and physiological perspective

I’m going to be posting more regularly on youth development and youth injury management. Hopefully to provide good conversations for parents and coaches alike. Questions and comments are always welcome, help spur the conversation and group learning!
