Expressive arts therapy uses the creative process of making art, writing, creating music and movement to help express thoughts and feelings that are difficult to put into words and also encourages motivation, spontaneity, creativity, choice, self-esteem and self-awareness. It is particularly helpful in trauma recovery and enhances the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of individ

uals of all ages. I also use a mindfulness based approach to counselling which is guided by 'trauma informed principles' supported by the latest international research. These principles involve operating in an environment that emphasises the following:

SAFETY: both physical and emotional and the importance of this can't be underestimated or overstated. TRUSTWORTHINESS: through task clarity, consistency and healthy interpersonal boundaries. CHOICE: individual choice and control in each step. COLLABORATION: collaboration and sharing of power. EMPOWERMENT: prioritising empowerment and skill-building.
