Chapter Leaders and Web Designates,

Many of you have been asking about the status of the SRD 2020 scheduled for May. Sadly, this date falls in the time frame that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a directive of "no large meetings or conferences" in order to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19. Therefore we have NO CHOICE but to cancel the dates of May 7-8-9 at this venue. I have been in discussion with our host hotel and unfortunately the reschedule options are few. There are too many unknowns in this scenario; how long will this international event will linger, if the dates for IRD will be moved and a lack of choices from the hotel far enough out to allow our members to feel comfortable.

So, it looks like we will have a chance to do something new and different this year! We are going to celebrate and honor our Division Winners, KOPS Graduates, Alumni, KOPS Longevity, Century Winners and Crown our State Royalty during our June and/or August Fun Days all around the State! We may just use Facetime live for some of these special events to allow other members in Oklahoma to enjoy it as well! (how exciting) And then, at 2021 SRD, we will have a special honor (you will have to wait and see) for our 2020 winners. We have never done this and of course we would rather honor our winners in the normal SRD manner, but you have to admit, this year is certainly not normal!

So it is with a heavy heart that I am announcing that we will cancel the VENUE for our SRD recognition, but not the recognition of our WINNERS!

Members will be refunded all money paid toward SRD and will need to cancel their hotel registrations as soon as possible. Should they still desire to purchase any shirts (Green Back to the Basics, the Blue Oklahoma T-shirt or the Pink TOPS is Flamazing Flamingo shirt) we will make those shirts available for order and purchase.

I know you may be disappointed (as am I) but this appears to be the best decision at this time.

Thank you for understanding. As plans are finalized, the advocates and I will be in touch with those who will be recognized to provide further information. Please reach out to me or the Advocates if you have any questions as we begin to make this a very Special Year(s) for our Winners!

Maria Alexander

Are Rice Cakes Healthy?

Hey Health Followers,

Rice cakes were a popular snack during the low-fat craze of the 1980s — but you may wonder whether you should still be eating them.

Made from puffed rice pressed together into a cake, rice cakes are often eaten as a low-calorie substitute for bread and crackers.

While flavored varieties are available, the most basic kind is made only from rice and sometimes salt. As to be expected, they don’t have much flavor on their own.

Let's examine the nutrition and health effects of rice cakes.:

Rice cakes are low in essential vitamins and minerals. They’re virtually fat-free and contain little protein or fiber.

A serving of rice cakes is lower in calories than bread or crackers, but the difference is minimal. In fact, gram for gram, rice cakes may even have more calories. They’re also lower in fiber and nutrients compared to whole-grain bread or crackers.

Rice cakes are made from whole grains and are usually gluten-free. However, they’re likely to raise your blood sugar quickly when eaten by themselves.

Most of the calories in rice cakes come from carbs. To balance their effect on your blood sugar, combine them with protein and fiber.

Rice cakes may be a common diet food, but there’s no real benefit to eating them if you don’t like them.

Does Coffee Raise Your Blood Pressure?

Science suggests that the physiological effects of drinking coffee can extend beyond a small dose of wakefulness. Research indicates that it may increase blood pressure for a short time after consumption.

A review of 34 studies showed that 200–300 mg of caffeine from coffee — approximately the amount you’d consume in 1.5–2 cups — resulted in an average increase of 8 mmHg and 6 mmHg in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively.

This effect was observed for up to three hours after consumption, and results were similar in people with normal blood pressure at baseline and those with pre-existing high blood pressure.

Interestingly, regular coffee consumption is not associated with the same impact on blood pressure — which may be due to the caffeine tolerance that develops when you habitually drink it.

Based on this data, a small to moderate increase in your blood pressure may occur after drinking a cup of coffee — especially if you drink it infrequently.

Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages, but it has been blamed for causing high blood pressure.

Research indicates that coffee may lead to short-term increases in blood pressure.

However, no long-term associations with increases in blood pressure or risk of heart disease have been found in people who drink it regularly.

Rather, coffee may promote heart health due to its high antioxidant content.

Although more research is needed, drinking coffee in moderation is likely a safe habit for most people.
