Mayan Patel Yoga Mayan is teaching private and group vinyasa yoga classes across London. Get your flow on! What to expect? Who's it for? Providing options for all body types.

Mayan's vinyasa flow yoga classes are an invigorating and encouraging dynamic flow. You will use deep breathing and enjoy a dynamic, flowing series of postures synchronising breath and movement to sweat out toxins, connect to your core and "feel" your body more. Whether you're after a refreshing workout, improved balance and flexibility or simply some time to yourself. The classes embrace a practi

ce of returning your attention to the breath while cultivating a stillness and ease of mind that you can take off your mat and into your life. The beginning of sessions are geared towards building heat and reinvigorating the body while the classes draw to a relaxing and meditative close. A welcome opportunity to release any carrying tension and centre yourself back in your body. Classes are open for beginners to intermediate students. With clear instructions to break down postures in a safe and accessible way. I encourage students to listen to their bodies and safely challenge themselves at an intensity that is appropriate and respectful for their bodies in the moment

While I do love a Yoga strap, the past few years I prefer to use exercise bands. Particularly for the way resistance changes depending on the stretch of the band. ⠀
⠀
Either way I like the colour of this strap so it gets a photo. ⠀

While i'm not as fancy and back-bendy as all those other instagrammer's I strive for sustainability in my practice. ⠀
⠀
Having had a mid-term lower back injury which is still present I realise how simple postures like these can be alluring to go to extremes. Chasing the shape and attainment. The way I practice now is prioritising and not sacrificing the areas that require support, for me to then be mobile in other areas.

Four. What other number shapes can you make with your body? ⠀

If someone asked you to make a figure four would this be the first shape you chose? ⠀

I enjoy little movement games like this because they change the lens and perspective on the shapes we are making.. and hopefully momentarily escape our habits too. ⠀

Any action can be perceived differently depending on where your attention is. Also where you perceive you initiate from. ⠀
⠀
I like to move my attention in postures around to find local points of interest (e.g extend my fingers) and also global relationships such as my wrists and my ankles and how they are interacting. ⠀
⠀
Try moving your attention and see what happens in your next posture. ⠀

Hands are the bomb.⠀
⠀
I occasionally catch students daydreaming and staring at their toes. Those are cool too. But how dexterous and mouldable and coordinated are our wonderful hands. Communicating our gestures, healing potential and creative interface with the world. Let's give a hand to hands for a moment.👏🏽⠀

Try stuff. ⠀
⠀
Especially the stuff that doesn't feel easy or nice. This is one of those postures for me. It took a long time to understand what the shoulder action is to allow for more range. It's still very limited but I think it builds contentment more than anything else in ones character doing things that feel unnatural to you.⠀

At first glance looks uncomfortable. I approach my neck like any other body part. Training it gradually with a small amount of resistance in different directions until it can weight bear safely. Quite often I don't see as much done on this side given all the peeps doing headstands. ⠀

Usually alot going on with this arm position in Garudasana. ⠀
⠀
One of the ways I like to sequence is trying a pose (or elements of it) in different planes. lying down, kneeling, standing, inverted etc. It's quite fascinating what you find when you change the action in relation to gravity⠀

Never did like this pose. ⠀
⠀
It always felt like my shoulder was pinching until I spent alot of time understanding it without weight bearing.⠀
⠀
A great way to practice is against a vertical wall and really focussing on initiating and rotating the scapula. Will try and make a video of some of my favourite rotational backbend drills soon.⠀

I know life feels pretty full on right now. ⠀
⠀
Happy baby is a fun posture when you start rocking around. There is also a serene quality to it that comes with dropping on the exhale. ⠀
⠀
Give in to the moment.⠀

While downward dog is cool, there are so many other interesting places to hang out. ⠀

Close your eyes, listen to your impulses and move towards pleasure. ⠀

Investigate and follow the sensations you feel before dictating your body into shapes. ⠀

Quite often when I see students moving on the ground they are resisting the floor and pushing away from it. That's one useful option, but not useful if its your only mode of being.⠀
⠀
Yielding to the floor and extending through your structure opens up many new possibilities for level changing without as much effort. Release. Contract. Expand. Find your centre over your support structures. Lots of fun.⠀
