(Update: Thanks to Hubert Lykins’ persistence and courage, with the help of SFLA’s legal counsel, PA Virtual Charter School honored his free speech rights and granted his SFLA group’s request to become an official school club.) I never thought the school would reject me for promoting life, but...

Being married is associated with better cancer outcomes. In fact, for some cancers, the survival benefit associated with marriage is larger than the published survival benefit of chemotherapy, report the authors of a study that looked at the medical records of more than 700,000 cancer patients.
After adjustment for demographic characteristics, tumor and nodal stage, and the use of definitive therapy, married patients were significantly less likely to die from cancer than patients who had never married or were separated, divorced, or widowed (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 0.80; P < .001). This association remained significant for all of the cancer types evaluated in the study (P < .05).
The study was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Millions of people spend the duration of their work day sitting in front of a computer, but few people understand the health detriments that extensive sitting causes. When we sit, the electrical activity in the muscles drops, causing the number of calories we burn to drop to just one per minute, in addition to a decrease in artery dilation, blood flow and insulin. It is estimated that if everyone sat for no more than three hours per day, life expectancy would increase by two years.

Raisins are good for hypertension.
For many years, some people have believed that raisins have the power to reduce blood pressure and protect the integrity of heart health, but it was only recently that experts began intensive studies on these claims. The findings, although still not absolutely definitive on how raisins reduced blood pressure, did show a positive correlation between reduced hypertension and consumption of raisins. Many of the nutrients packed into raisins are beneficial, but experts believe that it is the high level of potassium in raisins that helps with this condition. Potassium is a well-researched way to reduce the tension of blood vessels and decrease blood pressure, and the dietary fiber in raisins is also thought to affect the biochemistry of blood vessels and reduce their stiffness, which in turn reduces hypertension.

BEWARE OF LYME DISEASE!
Transmission of Lyme disease is very unlikely if the tick was attached for less than 24 hours. For ticks that have been attached more than a day, one meta-analysis showed that administration of prophylactic doxycycline within 72 hours of removal of the tick reduces the risk for subsequent Lyme disease from 2.2% to 0.2%. Therefore, the guidelines recommend that prophylactic antibiotic therapy be given to adults and children when it can be given within 72 hours of removal of an identified high-risk tick bite. High-risk tick bites are those from a deer tick in an endemic area that were attached for 36 hours or more. If used, prophylaxis should be a single dose of doxycycline 200 mg.

Results of the study revealed that participants who ate half of a fresh avocado with their lunch reported a 40% decreased desire to eat during the 3 hours after their lunch, and a 28% decreased desire to eat 5 hours after, compared with individuals who ate a standard lunch with no avocado.

The group who ate half of a fresh avocado also reported feeling 26% more satisfied after their lunch, compared with those who ate no avocado.
Avocado may also play some role in stabilizing blood sugar.

📌HEAT EXHAUSTION
• Signs: Heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, fainting, nausea, vomiting
• Actions: Go to an air-conditioned place and lie down. Loosen or remove clothing. Take a cool bath. Take sips of cool sports drinks with salt and sugar. Get medical help if symptoms get worse or last more than an hour.

📌HEAT STROKE
• Signs:
o Extremely high body temperature (above 103 degrees) taken orally
o Red, hot and dry skin with no sweat
o Rapid, strong pulse
o Dizziness, confusion or unconsciousness
• Actions: Call 9-1-1 or get the person to a hospital immediately.

✅Safety Tips
❄️Find places with air conditioning. Libraries, shopping malls, and community centers can provide a cool place to take a break from the heat. Visit nj211.org or dial 2-1-1 to find a cooling center near you.
👍Be a good neighbor. Check on those vulnerable to the heat including the elderly, children and family pets.
⚾️Be mindful when planning outdoor activities. Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated.
🚗Reminder: The inside of cars gets hot quickly, and much more intensely than outside. NEVER leave kids or pets inside a locked vehicle!

Most cases of sore throat do not need antibiotics.
New research shows oral dexamethasone can be very useful for acute sore throat in adults! It takes 2 days.
Among adults presenting to primary care with acute sore throat, a single dose of oral dexamethasone compared with placebo did not increase the proportion of patients with resolution of symptoms at 24 hours. However, there was a significant difference at 48 hours.
