When teenage boys are nodding along to a talk on life skills... you know something’s clicking.
This weekend, I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of young men about life skills that build strong roots.
The organizer had seen my work and invited me to speak about life skills and I knew exactly where to focus: the five essential life skills:
We talked about:
1. Positive coping tools (and how to spot negative ones)
2. Why it’s okay to talk about mental health
3. How to handle stress-and even make it your friend
4. The power of small habits (like making your bed)
5. The importance of connection
It was about 40 minutes of quiet nods, full attention, and gratitude. They soaked it in.
The highlight of my weekend was receiving this handwritten card from the group:
“Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. The information was thought-provoking and will help us face the many pressures and challenges in our future. We will use these ideas you gave us to improve the way we handle days.”
Even though much of my work focuses on helping parents and families heal from eating disorders and disordered eating, background as a health educator, professor, and coach allows me to reach broader audiences with tools for resilience, balance, and real lifewellness.
