In 2022, I received documents from the Arolsen Archives in Germany concerning Edward Schubert and people associated with him.
There are 51 pages in total. The first is an Ausweis (no number!), an identification card for the name: Schubert Eduard, born 7.11.1914 Złoczer, employed from 30.11.1942 in Leislau at the J.P. Sauer & Sohn factory, Suhl, as a Machinenarbeiter.
The different sound of the name Schubert - I think - could have been caused by a writer, probably a German, who Germanized his name to SCHUBERT.

Edward is in the photo. Underneath are the prints of his index fingers (zeigefinger) - left and right.
This document was issued for "Zivilarbeiter polnischen Volkstums" - "Polish civilian workers". The "Familiemstand" - Civil status column indicates that Edward is married ("verh"). This indicates his first wife, Władysława Szubert, née Wilk, who with two children (including Barbara, my mother-in-law, then 5 years old) was in occupied Poland.

POLISH:
W 2022 roku otrzymałem dokumenty z Arolsen Archives w Niemczech, dotyczace Edwarda Szuberta i osob z nim zwiazanych.

I found this data last year. I don't know what I was waiting for.
This is unlikely to help find Edward, but it may document the arrival of his wife, Jozefa, and son Richard, from Germany, to the United States in 1951.
Marital status showing her as D/F - probably it means Divorced/Female (they divorced in Germany after she found he was cheating on her). But later met and married second time.
Plus Destination address is Baldwin Park in California. Exactly same which we knew and all can find in earliers posts.

Does anyone can recognize the face of the man on this picture?
This question is especially for Canadian citizens and Montrealers.

I want to find my wife’s grandfather Edward Szubert or his other relatives in America.
He does not return from Germany after War World II and moved to the United States (see all details in earlier posts).

Edward was still using his Szubert name in 1965 when the oldest son of the second wife, Jozefa, contacted with him and when unknown Canadian lady called to her to California.

I guess, that he may have lived in Montreal in Canada.
I am almost sure, he has changed his name when moved to Canada. That is why I cannot find any other information.

Maybe there are still people who can recognize his face and could tell me about him something more.
Please, read his below story and let me know if you knew him.

Unfortunately, after a month, the girls didn’t replied. Same us their television’s programme producer.
So, I still have nothing new 😞

Znalazlem na Facebooku artykul o dwoch dziewczynach (Kinga i Karolina z Your Roots in Poland). Zajmuja sie genealogia, odszukiwaniem przodków.
Poprosilem je o zapoznanie sie z historia poszukiwanego przez nas dziadka, Edwarda Szuberta. Co z tego wyniknie- zobaczymy :)

I used the Mapire website, which posted on Facebook (thanks to Histmag.org) 19th century maps of Europe.
I found the birthplace of Edward Szubert, Złoczew and probably Złoczewska Village.

These lands were under the Russian partition until I World War.

On the map of Złoczew in the Cyrillic alphabet is marked above as Гм. у. ЭлoчEBЪ
that is Złoczew Commune Office (see photo number 5).
It seems that ЭлoчeBcka can be this Złoczewska village.

Other markings on the map:
ф ферма - farm / grange (ser photo number 6).

Do you recognize this man?
If yes, see his story and leave me message, please.

The last contact with Edward was from Canada in the sixties. Probably from Montreal.

A couple of month ago I asked British Red Cross to help me to ask Canadian Red Cros in Edward’s search.
Our case has been reviewed by a National Caseworker in London, and unfortunately, there was not currently enough information to send a request to the Canadian Red Cross.

Message from Bob to admin@qfhs.ca, July 13, 2011:

Dear Administration,

We are searching for our long lost father. Our last family contact with him was in Montreal in 1965. Our best guess is that he may have died in Montreal near that time because he never again wrote to any of his family members, either in the U.S. or Poland. I have called the Cimetiere Notre Dame and the Mount Royal Cemetery and neither had a listing, but the lady at Mount Royal gave me your name. Could you please help us?

Our father's name is:

Edward Stanislaw Szubert. (phonetic spelling Shubert)
Born: November 7, 1916 in Zloczew, Poland
Father's name: Jozef Szubert
Mother's name: Stanislawa Lukomska

1939-1940 Worked as a machinist in the N**i slave labor camps in Suhl, Germany.
January 20, 1952 Arrived in New York aboard the USNS Gen. Blatchford and went to California.
Approx. July 1962, went to Montreal thru the Chicago area.
1965 was our last contact with him in Montreal, though we no longer have that address or phone number.

Any suggestions you may have would be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you,

Bob
..and the anwer:

Dear Bob

We checked the Consolidated Death Index for the Province of Quebec 1916-1996, There is only one possible entry -

Edward Szubert, born November 11, 1925 ( the informer might not have known the correct year) died in Montreal on September 29, 1986.

It would be necessary to check for an obituary to confirm this is your lost father.

I am sorry if I appear to blunt, was he Jewish? There is a large Jewish Cemetery in Montreal on de la Savana Street.
You can google the site. Paperman and Sons is the recognized funeral home to look after arrangements.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to write.

Regards
Joan Benoit

16 July 2011:

As for Canadian hospitals, there are 8 in the Montreal area, but hospitals never respond to such requests in the West due to privacy laws, not to mention time. My wife Karen was a nurse for 35 years so she knows how hospitals work. Getting one to look thru old employment records would be very difficult, and very expensive, and may not lead anywhere.

The only good choice in Montreal is cemeteries. Everyone in the Jozef Szubert family photo is already dead, even Edward's 2 younger brothers, so it's very likely that Edward is already dead too. I have called the 2 largest cemeteries in Montreal, and neither one had anyone named Szubert or Edward Shubert. When I get time I will call the other 10 cemeteries too. All the cemeteries there have computer data bases of their residents, and staff to look up names for us, and speak English. That's probably our best choice at the moment.

I'm also waiting to hear back from that family society in Montreal. They have abilities way beyond our abilities, and they are there in Montreal. They may have some more ideas.

Jeanne also said she would call the Catholic Polish Sisters given to us by the pastor at St. John's Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio that Edward listed as his destination in the U.S. on his ship log in 1952. Jeanne was raised Catholic, so she would know how to kindly ask them about their contacting St. Mary's Cathredral in Zloczew about Edward's previous family records, previous to his father Jozef Szubert. That may be interesting. It may be that a request coming from a Catholic group in the West may move someone at St. Mary's to respond to a request that they just wouldn't do for someone in Poland. Americans think differently about WWII and old history than people in Europe tend to do.

Jeanne is also planning on visiting the 7th Street house again next week, because she is very busy this week, with her oldest daughter Anna going off to college. We are still hopeful that someone there still knows something else. It may be just too painful for them to speak about it easily, so Jeanne is going to try to speak with them one on one. Edward did cause a lot of damage to a lot of people, so who knows.

Jeanne is also going to try to get some more information from her mother, Margaret. Margaret would know the most about Edward, more than anone else alive, since she is the last known wife of Edward and is only 76, but that is still very painful too. Jeanne says they were all forbidden to talk about Edward when growing up. So we will see.

In my family travels and searches I was also able to get 2 undated group photos of my mother Jozefa in the slave labor camps in Suhl, Germany, that I have never seen before. My mother's sister, Bronia, is still alive and was in the slave labor camps with my mother, but worked in different areas. Bronia is not in the photos and neither is Edward. The photos are of women and a few N**i men, but it may be possible that the Russian and/or Ukranian woman Edward was involved with, or married to, in Suhl, Germany is also in the photo. We just don't know.

I also got a poor photocopy of Bronia's N**i workbook for aliens from the slave labor camps. My mother and Edward also had such workbooks. The cover says: "DEUTSCHES REICH" with a graphic of the N**i eagle and swastica over the earth, and "ARBEITSBUCH FUR AUSLANDER". Have you ever seen such a book? I will send you a copy after we clean it up some. Ours is a very poor copy.

Email dated 13 July 2011:

Cemeteries in Montreal are probably much like the Calvary Cemetery in L.A., so their residents are not published online, but Edward Szubert is such an unusual spelling for Canada, we may actually be able to find out something by calling them. The very large Catholic cemetery in Los Angeles didn't have a single 'Szubert' listed in their computer database.

It would take some work, but it wouldn't be expensive with Skype. Edward was still using his Szubert name in 1965 when Richard contacted him and that Canadian lady called us, which is when he disappeared. It may be our best choice.

(And later another email):

I called the 2 largest cemeteries in Montreal, the Catholic Cimetiere Notre Dame, and the Mount Royal. Neither had an Edward Szubert or Shubert. But the lady at the Mount Royal gave me a name of a society that may be helpful:

Quebec Family History Society
Phone: 514 695 1502
Fax: 514 695 3508
Email: admin@qfhs.ca

I will send them an email today.
