What's one story you hope we're telling 40 years from now?

"I don't think it is something with a ton of razzle-dazzle. I think it is the tried-and-true. We really care at the Partnership, and we work every day to make the world a better place for people with disabilities and their families.

We are part of this community, and we are totally dedicated to the mission. That is what has always made the Partnership special."

If you could convey one message to future leaders, what would it be?

"I would say optimism is important.

Things can seem hopeless and scary at times, but we have to keep pushing forward. The stakes are just too high to disengage. We have to keep trying to build the world we want."

We’ve been shining the spotlight on Dana Yarbrough, our fearless, thoughtful, and deeply impactful leader.

After years of powerful leadership, we had one burning question: How does she do it? So we asked and Dana answered.

If you could rewrite one policy or change one thing with a magic wand, what would it be?

"I would change the phrase "special education student." Students are simply that - students of their school, not defined by a program or label.

The label of special education (or sped) student creates separation when what we're truly striving for is inclusion and belonging."

What's one lesson you've learned from families or self-advocates?

"I have learned, and continue to learn from people with disabilities and families every day!

One thing that sticks with me is the tenacity and perseverance required to make change happen.
You have to keep at things and not give up. People have been great role models for me with this both professionally and as a parent. "
