Abhyanga is the ancient art of oil massage — a daily ritual that nourishes both body and mind. Warm, herb-infused oils glide across the skin, soothing tension, calming the nervous system, and restoring balance.

Especially in Vata season 🍂, when the air is cool and dry, this gentle practice brings warmth, grounding, and ease. It softens the body, opens energy pathways, and invites a mindful pause.

Even a few minutes a day can leave you feeling lighter, calmer, and more connected to yourself. Abhyanga is more than massage — it’s a quiet act of self-care, a way to nurture your energy, and a step toward lasting vitality.

🌿 According to Ayurveda, you have vital energy centers located throughout your body. These are marma points, and stimulating them can promote healing, restore balance, and improve your mood. ✨

📜 Marma means “secret” or “vital” in Sanskrit, and the marma points are said to serve as gateways between your body and consciousness. You'll find them all over your body, at the points where muscles, veins, ligaments, bones, and joints intersect. Ayurvedic texts mention 108 primary marma points, each associated with specific organs, tissues, and systems.

🍂 This October, we’re running a beautiful, two-day online course to teach you the sacred art of Ayurvedic marma face massage — a calming, heart-opening practice for radiance, emotional release, and inner peace. 💆‍♀️

🤲 All you need is your own hands, a bit of oil, and some guided time to reconnect with yourself.

⚖️ In the next post, we'll look at what happens when the marma points become unbalanced.

Herbs are the fifth Dru Ayurveda pathway, and if you like cooking, you can have great fun with them. Herbs give life to your food, making the kitchen smell wonderful. Not only that, but Ayurveda also teaches us that each ingredient has its own properties. Be warned: Delving into the science of cooking can be addictive! 🌿

Summer is also a wonderful time to experiment with herbal drinks. Sip cool drinks throughout the way, and try infusing them with herbs for extra flavour and cooling effects.🌱

Here are our top cooling ingredients to add to your drink this summer:

🍃Mint;

💚Saffron;

🍃Coriander;

☕Cumin seeds;

Mint, coriander and saffron can be added to fresh water. Try boiling cumin seeds for a few minutes and then cooling the tea and sipping throughout the day. 🥤

And if you really can't do without your coffee, add a little cardamom to the mix to counteract the effects of the caffeine on your nervous system. 😀

Yoga and meditation make up the third Dru Ayurvedic pathway

🧘‍♀️To balance pitta dosha, fight the urge to just keep on going and allow yourself to slow down at this time of year. Invite a sense of luxuriousness into your movements, allowing your body to flow, unled by the mind.

🚶Avoid competitiveness—even with yourself. Instead, move with gentleness and joy, with eyes downcast or even closed.

☀️And if you don't yet have a yoga and meditation practice, summer is the best time to start!

🐢You don't need to spend an hour twisting and stretching on the mat to call it a yoga practice. Just a few minutes a day or mindful movement is all that it takes to make you feel more at home in your body as you move through your day.

🧘‍♂️You also don't need to sit in meditation for a long time to make it worthwhile. If you have a pitta constitution, you probably like a challenge. So here's the challenge:

Slow down. Do less. Sit quietly.

The first ‘Pathway of Dru Ayurveda’ is DIET.

If you're a strong pitta type, you might tend to fall back on spicy foods and sour tastes as your staple, but Ayurvedic wisdom recommends two main rules for when your pitta is high:

🍋 Avoid salty, pungent and sour foods;

🥬Choose sweet, bitter and astringent foods.

In practice, this means reducing:

🌶️Hot spices

☕Coffee

🍺Alcohol

and choosing plenty of:

🥦Green vegetables

🥕Roots

🥥Other cooling foods such as coconut-infused rice.

If you find the very suggestion of reducing your favourite foods alarming, hold that thought! You don't need to completely overhaul your diet to find more balance (at least, not all at once).

On a particularly hot day, take the opportunity to get to know what works and what doesn't. Perhaps this would be a good day to say no to that oily, spicy dish for dinner, and opt instead for a cooling mung bean kitchari. Maybe it's also a good time to limit caffeine and alcohol. It doesn't mean you can't ever have them again, but choose your moments.
