Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May for honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Here is some advice from our Veteran’s Care Team Network on how to celebrate the holiday respectfully: on Memorial Day it is not appropriate to wish anyone a “Happy Memorial Day” or thank a current service member. Appropriate activities include attending a parade or visiting a cemetery or Veteran monument.

Two other days celebrate those who have served or are serving in the U.S. military: Armed Forces Day (which is earlier in May), an unofficial U.S. holiday for honoring those currently serving in the armed forces, and Veterans Day (on November 11), which honors all those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Both care team members and patients acknowledge Psych Tech Terry Hyde’s warm approach to care. Her attentive nature, teamwork and effortless positivity have earned her a PETAL award. The PETAL Award recognizes, rewards and celebrates the special skills and compassionate care provided by our nursing support staff. Terry received multiple nominations that read:

“It is obvious that (the Petal Award) was meant for Terry to receive. Terry has gone out of her way to make patients feel as comfortable and at home as they can while receiving treatment. When she is working you know you’ll have great teamwork and lots of support. She always recognizes her coworkers for their hard work as well. We love Terry, and she deserves this more than anything.”

“Terry is always willing to help. She never says “no” to lending a hand. She is attentive and kind to all the patients. She works extra shifts and gets along well with her coworkers.”

“Such positive energy without even trying. Warms the whole room up and is very easy to approach. Always smiling and joking and lifting our spirits up. It shows that she loves what she does.”

Congratulations, Terry, on this remarkable accomplishment, and thank you for all that you do!

Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) has been a proud part of the York County community for 118 years - since 1906 when the Webber Hospital opened on Pool Road in Biddeford. In 1911 the Webber Hospital moved to Elm Street and in 1977 construction began of the new hospital at its current location, 1 Medical Center Drive. In 1985 Webber Hospital became Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC). In 2008 PrimeCare Physician Services joined SMMC. In 2008 the Dorothy Walker Bush Emergency Care Pavilion opened. On January 1, 2014 SMMC merged with Henrietta D. Goodall Hospital to become SMHC. Henrietta D. Goodall Hospital was opened in 1928 by George B. Goodall and his daughter, Marion (Goodall) Marland, in memory of his wife and her mother. In 1986 the Woodbury Building was dedicated for Dorothy “Dot” Woodbury who began and ran the nurse training program at Goodall and worked there for over six decades.

We have evolved over the years, but the heart of what makes our organization so special has continued and that is the incredible care teams, past and present, that serve our communities with excellence and compassion.

As we start this exciting new chapter as MaineHealth Maine Medical Center on June 1, we want to honor the contributions of this team and the teams before. Thank you to our care teams and our community!

Starting June 3, this page will merge with the Maine Medical Center page under the name MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. This combined page will be keeping you up-to-date on what’s happening in our locations throughout southern Maine.
