Today is World Health Day! 🌍⚕️

World Health Day marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO) founding in 1948. On this day every year, WHO aims to raise global awareness on a critical healthcare topic and promote equitable access and the human right to healthcare. This year WHO is uniting many nations and countries under the theme, “Together for Health”, and celebrating the power of scientific collaboration to protect the health of all people, animals, plants, and the planet.

Programs like Medicaid are especially important to commemorate on this day, as Medicaid serves as a key mechanism in the US to ensure health coverage for vulnerable populations and advance the right and equity to healthcare access. Today, 75.7 million people rely on Medicaid, including income-qualifying families, seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals in underserved communities. Protecting this program is essential to making sure these communities continue to receive the care and support they depend on.

🌟 Fellow Spotlight 🌟

This month, Health Tech 4 Medicaid (HT4M) is proud to spotlight Yashoswini Chakraborty! She is a Master of Healthcare Administration candidate at Northwestern University with a background in neuroscience and clinical research. Driven by a passion for health equity, healthcare systems, and improving access to care, Yashoswini aspires to become a physician and improve patient outcomes by strengthening how care is delivered.

During her fellowship with HT4M, Yashoswini has made impactful contributions toward driving Medicaid innovation and advancing a more equitable healthcare system. Her work has included developing a policy-focused landscape report on H.R.1, a federal bill introducing changes to Medicaid eligibility and access to care, as well as examining factors affecting Medicaid accessibility and coverage among South Asian populations. She also contributed to advocacy programming on women’s heart health that explored legislative initiatives and how changes in Medicaid policy can impact access to preventive and cardiovascular care. Through these efforts, they contribute to a broader commitment to improving access, quality, and equity across the healthcare landscape.

Medicaid plays a critical role in supporting nearly 1.6 million autistic individuals across the U.S. — providing access to services that are essential for both daily life and long-term well-being, including early intervention and behavioral health services.

From home- and community-based services to speech and occupational therapy services, Medicaid helps ensure individuals with autism can access the care they need to thrive. This includes providing them with life skills, home care, employment supports, applied behavior analysis (ABA), and other essential resources that help autistic individuals thrive. For many families, Medicaid is the foundation to make this care possible.

World Autism Month is a reminder that access to comprehensive, lifelong support isn't optional, it's essential. We must continue to advocate for care that is consistent, affordable, and truly person-centered.

Across our sessions, prevention as the strategy consistently emerged as a theme.

🚀 Medicaid as a Moonshot: Democratizing Access to Cancer Clinical Trials

What would it take to build a Medicaid system that truly works for the communities it serves? At our 2026 Future of Medicaid Innovation Forum, we asked leaders across healthcare, investment, innovation, and policy to share their Medicaid moonshot — bold ideas for what comes next.

This week’s moonshot: "Ensure that Medicaid members diagnosed with cancer have real access to cutting-edge clinical trials — not just standard treatment pathways." — Chad Hinrichs, Founder, TrialTriage

Medicaid patients are among the least likely to access oncology clinical trials, despite often facing the greatest disease burden. TrialTriage proposes a tech-enabled oncology platform that identifies newly diagnosed cancer patients and matches them to appropriate clinical trials, with a specific focus on historically excluded Medicaid populations.

Through partnerships with life sciences sponsors, including oncology leaders, the model aims to:
• Expand access to next-generation cancer therapies for diverse and underserved communities
• Shift high-cost specialty drug spend from Medicaid plans to sponsor-funded trials
• Improve care coordination and monitoring for patients enrolled in trials
• Generate real-world data to inform more equitable oncology coverage and care management decisions

Rather than limiting trial access to academic medical centers, this moonshot seeks to operationalize a scalable pathway across safety-net providers, embedding trial matching directly into care-management workflows for newly diagnosed patients.

At its core, this vision asks: what if Medicaid members were systematically connected to the most advanced therapies available, while aligning incentives across payers, providers, and life sciences partners?

Inside the conversation: "Medicaid as a Moonshot: Building the Infrastructure for Equitable Innovation"

At HT4M's 2026 Future of Medicaid Innovation Forum, our panelists discussed best practices for building health infrastructure that delivers proactive, equitable care at scale.

Speakers agreed: we already know what works. The challenge is identifying who needs support, delivering care beyond clinic walls, and aligning financial models so providers can sustain change.

📌 The crux of the discussion was that in this period of flux, the time is ripe for innovators to harness the power of new technology and implement the changes that we know can lead to better outcomes for both patients and health workers.

🏥 Colby Takeda of Pear Suite noted that “Health plans often don’t know how to engage community organizations or compensate them. If you don’t ask how to value their time and energy, you won’t know where to start.” The lesson is evident: true change is led and delivered by the health workers that have committed to serving their communities.

🗺️ Panelists emphasized proactive care, community-based delivery, and human-centered design, while also naming the critical role of automation and AI in reducing waste and administrative burden. Community health workers, trusted navigators, and lived experience were lifted up as core to system design, not add-ons, highlighting that all Medicaid beneficiary should have access to what works, delivered through systems designed for scale, trust, and impact.
