Did you know that Young Living currently holds 17 patents issued from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, more than any other direct sales company in Utah? As we look for new oils for you to share and ways to use those oils, it’s only natural that we take innovative steps and pioneer new technologies and processes.
That’s why it’s no surprise that Young Living’s late founder, D. Gary Young, is listed as an inventor on 14 of Young Living’s patents, and CEO Mary Young is listed as an inventor on four. The company has previously filed 10 other patent applications, and our products are cited on an additional 14 patent applications filed by third parties.
So what is a patent? Patents protect any product, design, or process that meets certain specifications, depending on its originality, practicality, suitability, and utility. In most cases, a patent can protect an invention for up to 20 years from when the patent application is filed. Securing a patent is no easy task, as the requirements for originality and usefulness are a high bar to clear.
There are two principal kinds of patents, and Young Living holds both kinds. First, utility patents, or patents for invention, are issued to those who invent or discover a new process, method, composition, or machine. Second, design patents, or patents for manufactured items, are granted only if the product exhibits a distinctive decoration or design.
Why do patents matter when it comes to essential oils?
