When you put everything aside - numbers, ratios, grams, nutrient partitioning - put simply, macros are nutrients in food.

And it’s important to get your macros from quality food.

When trying to lose fat, you should always prioritize your strength training over cardio.

If you love to do cardio, before working out, and it makes you feel great to train, then be my guest.

But if what you’re looking for is the most effective way to progress in the gym, I wouldn’t.

Not that you won’t progress.

You will.

But it will take longer.

So if you’re combining strength training with cardio (which is by no means necessary to lose fat, check my profile for a more in depth explanation), I guess you want it to be as effective as possible.

At the end of the day, you’re putting in the work.

So here you have 3 reasons why I would relegate cardio to AFTER your strength training session.

Long story short, train 6 times per week for 45mins instead of 3 times for 90mins.

A new study by Bartolomei et al. compared the recovery response of one resistance training session vs. two resistance training sessions (performed on the same day) on upper body performance and markers of recovery in trained men. This study is a pre-print, which means the full study hasn't been published yet.

Method
24 trained men were randomly assigned into the one session group or two session group.

The one session group did 8 sets of 10 reps bench press (70% of 1RM). The two session group did the same training volume divided across two sessions with a 4 hour break between sessions.

Performance was assessed by measuring bench press throw power and isometric bench press force. Muscle thickness of the pectoralis major was also measured (presumably as a marker of swelling). All measures were assessed at baseline, 15-minutes, 24-hours and 48-hours after training.

Results
The training intensity was significantly higher in the two-session group compared to the one session group. Faster recovery rates were detected in the two session group. Results indicate that recovery could be accelerated by splitting a resistance training volume into two different training sessions.

⚠️Limitations
The study investigated one vs two sessions using one exercise (bench press) on one occasion (not over multiple weeks). Obviously, most people perform more than one exercise in a session, so it could be that spacing exercises out within one session produces similar results.

The session involved a very high volume (8 sets of 10!) of one exercise. This is uncommon in most training programmes and could explain why detriments in performance and recovery were worse in the one session group. Had a more realistic volume (e.g., 4x10) been done, it's likely that the differences in performance and recovery would be reduced (or there would possibly be no difference between the groups).

Specific rep ranges can be "more optimal" and more efficient when the goal is muscle growth. And indeed that is the case, because when we factor in fatigue and understand its cause and effect, then we can pretty much agree that choosing the right amount of intensity (intended as load on the bar) within a lower-medium rep range (to work within optimal training volume ranges) can be a good idea to stiumlate muscle growth, because as we know it can be achieved via a variety of loading zones.

However, while a lot of people like to think in absolutes such as *clear* or *defined* rep ranges, where hypertrophy, strength and endurance adaptations happen kind of "separately", the reality is much more nouanced, where end ranges do in fact provide more specific adaptations, but hypertrophy can be achieved simultaneously, pretty much across all weight %es and loading zones.
