During the Edo period in Japan, incense sticks are used as a incense clock.

*How to use?*
Spread a line of incense powder over a surface using a wooden frame and place time tags at regular intervals to mark time according to the speed the incense burns.

This was an exhibit located at Seiko Museum in Ginza Tokyo, Japan.

The food recipes I share on this channel usually are food therapy related, meaning using food as therapy. It's so good that I have to share.

I chanced upon Gaz Oakley brownie recipe and was inspired to recreate something similar, using very different ingredients and proportions from what he suggested.

Here's a very moist, tasty, healthy brownie with no sugar, no milk, no butter, no floor. Gluten-free and guilt-free.

300g steam pumpkin
110g canned chickpeas
3TBS chia seeds
3TBS white sesame seeds
100g cocoa powder
3TBS maca powder
1/4 cup oatmilk
3TBS olive oil
3TBS maple syrup

Bake for 30mins at 180 Celsius.

As someone who has studied TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine, "dosage" has always been emphasized.

An herb can work fine at a certain dosage and if exceeded, it can become a poison (e.g. eating excessive gingko nuts, like more than 10 at one go, can cause intestinal discomfort. Note that the word "poison" does not necessarily equate to death in herbalism, it could refer to adverse reaction).

Similarly when you use essential oils, it's also not the one drop you might be using. Most don't even realised if they count in their shampoos, conditioners, lotions,

Less is always more. Not only you save costs, you are environmentally conscious too. Companies who tell you to use more EO only want you to buy more. It's not for your benefit but for their revenue target.

Below I'm sharing a simple explanation by Aromatic Elements.

A cup of celery juice could end up with skin disaster. Here's why...

Hong Kong summer is incredibly hot and humid. The heat is so intense despite being only around 32C or 90F. I had to change my top midway while doing a 80 min power yoga without aircon and fan, as entire top was completely soaked in sweat.

About noon time (yesterday), right in the midst of the hottest, most intense heat, I walked from Fortress Hill to Causeway Bay. The walk took around 10 mins, passing thru buildings, shelters and Victoria park. Sometimes the path is sheltered, other times it's out in the open sun.

When I got back home, I was shocked to see my face all red like sunburn. My arms looked the same despite not applying sunscreen; I only applied sunscreen on my face and neck whenever I stepped out. And I couldn't find any reasons why my face looked horrendously red.

I had my aha moment this morning as I was blending celery juice. I suddenly remembered that Celery belongs to the Apiaceae/Umbelliferae family. Herbs like carrots, celery, dill, fennel, cumin all belong to this family.

Many members in this family produce furocoumarin, a photo-toxic molecule that can cause sunburn when you are exposed to the sun. Ah...that's why my face was burned!

Aromatherapists have to study chemical constituents in essential oil as it can be dangerous if you don't. But celery juice was a food, and frankly, I didn't even think about what plant family it belonged to!

If I could make the mistake of exposing myself to the sun after consuming a bunch of celery juice, anyone could make that mistake too. Mind you, I was not even hiking, just walking thru buildings most of the time throughout this 10 min walk.

Thank goodness my face looks better today after I applied a generous amount of aloe vera once last night and once this morning. I also sprayed some rose hydrosol in between to cool down the inflammation and sunburn.

Do not use fresh aloe on your skin as the yellow sap inside is a skin irritant.

Did you know drinking celery juice could cause sunburn?

Product Formulation In Process.

A skincare/bodycare product can sometimes be formulated out of a customer need, a formulator's idea, an upgrade from existing products, or even specific requests from customers, or other reasons.

One of the fun things as a product formulator is repeatedly testing, tweaking, and improving a formula. This can take weeks to months, depending on many factors. Quality control, ease of use, scents, color, texture, viscosity of final product, therapeutic properties, costs, and sustainability are some thoughts process that need to be considered. Since this post is short, I can only name a few such processes to give you an idea.

In short, all products that arrive at your hands have been thoroughly researched, tested, and tested again, undergoing in-house quality control over a duration. That's assuming raw ingredients sourcing, comparison, selection has been done and completed.

I've made several scalp care products over the years. Some are oil-based, others like above are water-based. Is oil better than water-based? It all depends on how an end user likes to use it to suit his or her lifestyle.

This water-based scalp treatment is undergoing improvements to add new ingredients, re-test, comparing different percentages, and then comparing its efficacy and results when using. I compare several batches side by side to get the one that's most desirable.

If you have scalp issues including dandruff, oily scalp, dry or itchy scalp, alopecia, it is important to look at your diet, lifestyle, and choose the right product to maintain healthy scalp and beautiful glossy hair.

Being trained in herbalism (particularly Chinese Medicine) and aromatherapy, I always believe in holistic care. Humans always look for shortcuts, and everyone wants a magic pill.

The truth - health & beauty are always interconnected. That's why outer care is as important as inner care. In Chinese, we call that 正體觀念 holistic therapy. 內外調理 Treating causes both internally (thru diet/food therapy, medicine or lifestyle) and externally (such as application).

Happy Friday! Do you know American Ginseng, unlike Korean Ginseng, is a little on the cooling side in terms of herbal energetics?

If you constantly sleep late, you'll tend to be on the fiery side, edgy & easily irritated. Then this herb is for you as it helps to cool you down, nourish your yin (to bring down that fiery energetics, and balance your yin and yang).

This is a great herb to boost one's energy whenever you are feeling a little tired, sluggish and needs to replenish your Qi & nourish your Yin.

American Ginseng can be consumed throughout all seasons, EXCEPT for folks who have cold constitution like cold hands and feet, diahhroea, often have soft stools etc. For the latter, pls drink in moderation.

By pairing A.G. with rose, it can move qi and blood, improve blood circulation, and Rose is known to be a good anti-depressant if you're feeling low and sad.

Wolfberries, as you probably know adds sweetness to this drink, and is good for your eyes, plus it can also reduce blood pressure.

I love this drink as it's so simple to put together, and has so many health benefits and improving blood circulation means it'll improve your skin, which is a secondary benefit in this case. Enjoy!

This giant purple flower smells like rotten flesh. And its root is like a yam, used to make jelly and noodles in Japan. When you grind this root into powder, it's used to make gel, like face gel in cosmetic formulation.

Let me know if you've smelled it, and if you have, pls share your experience.

Check out on my IG reel for the answer, on what this plant is.
