In Tibetan Buddhism, the concept is referred to as Nekkhama: to Renunciate. As you lay down and become enmeshed in quietude, the subtle realm becomes more pronounced and externalities sheathe away.

All that’s left is the beckoning will to draw inwards. Choosing a pentacle repose is a radical renunciation – a different way of being in the world: more refined.

It’s quite phenomenal to simplify and surrender enough to become unhinged from the normal turbulence your system learns to rely on. Without this preoccupation, you can learn to deeply love where you are right now.

THE OBJECTIVE OF YIN.

A still, intentional embodiment practice helps to soothe the fluctuations of a cluttered mentality and release the binding grip of muscular stress. Yin is the format we may use to withdraw from normative patterning of stimulation and let all the energetic build-up of the daily debris find a way to percolate through the system and be effectively released.

Certain implications of stress emerge around the tops of the thighs and the bottom of the hip flexor – a critical fight or flight response when the system is in stress – and so a shape which lengthens the quadriceps and compresses the bottom insertion of the psoas is paramount to softening and widening the legs so we might settle into groundedness.

The Buddha suggested that these 2 mind states are what fuel all internal struggles. Craving and aversion are at the root of our suffering.

Craving refers to our tendency to chase after sensual gratification. Craving occurs when we cling to something we want to remain unchanged, or when we wish something was here that is not. Craving is wanting what is not here right now.

Aversion, on the other hand, is not what wanting what is here now. When we resist, resent, recoil, attack. This is simply craving in reverse- clinging to what we wish or assume should happen instead.

Remember that the goal is to observe and pe*****te our patterns, observe their imprint on our neurology.

In a mindful life we are able to host the arrival of craving & aversion rather than become them. Observing them keeps them at arms length- upon observation you can’t stay enmeshed in the intoxicating pull of their narrative.

The heart is responsible for the wisdom of what Buddha called the sublime states, or divine abodes. He suggested we constantly visit and dwell in particular attitudes, behavioral qualities and thought streams from the heart. ❤️

Instead of just waiting to be more loving, compassionate and forgiving, the suggestion is that we practice these particular qualities.

It’s something to be cultivated. Like a muscle, the heart realm must be exercised. Dwelling spaces we ritualistically return to. Strengthened because we’ve regularly conditioned it.

The more we visit these particular qualities, the more immersed in them we become. Fully saturated in them, we’ll stir up these attitudes and sink deep into the heart so that heart-informed living becomes spontaneous in our manifestation.

“Through this course, I have become more confident in my physical/emotional/mental self. The lessons I have learn (especially the meditations) have added a whole new level to my classes and also the classes I am in as a student.

I feel that as an individual I am able to express my intentions with more care and stability. All I want in my life is to be able to share and receive with an open and non-judgmental mind. Understanding my suffering and evolution and those around me has helped me do this. There are many things to learn in the practice of yoga, especially philosophically, away from the movement.

Learning more about Hara has helped me flip perspective and deepened my knowledge in a way I didn’t know it could - thank you.”

How to change your brain? By focusing your attention.

Awareness harnesses the power of neuroplasticity in specific circuits.

The focus of attention is like the scalpel that lets you remold the structure of the brain. Recent research shows where you focus attention activates the neurons that correlate with that activity.

So focus on breath- and you activate interoceptive focus. If you’re playing an instrument and you’re focusing your attention on your fingers on a piano- as you focus attention you activate those circuits, neurons fire together and become wired to create channels of patterns, traits, from a mindful state.

Mindfulness, then, becomes easier & easier to return to.

Yoga, in turn, teaches you that sensations rise to a peak and then fall.

Impermanence is key, you can anticipate the end of discomfort and strengthen your capacity to deal with distress.

In contrast to timeless ever present experience of trauma, physical sensations are transient and respond to slight shifts in thinking, breathing, and body position (asana).  We can tolerate a great deal of discomfort when we know it’s transitory, and we can also tolerate more when we don’t resist uncomfortable sensations.

At the core of trauma recovery is self-awareness – becoming in touch with the inner landscape and ephemeral nature of sensation.
