The set-up phrase is always said three times and consists of (a) naming the problem you are Tapping for (b) accepting* the situation or oneself.

Examples of typical set-up phrases include:

-Even though I feel this pressure in the back of my neck, I accept myself as I am

-Even though I am stressed out because I have so much work to do, I accept the situation as it is

-Even though I am angry at my neighbor, I deeply and completely love and accept myself as I am

*If accepting yourself or a uncomfortable situation feels forced or inappropriate, you may try altering the end of the set-up phrase with something like this: Even though I am stressed out because I have so much work to do, I want to accept the situation as it is OR part of me wants to accept the situation as it is OR I am ok right here and right now.

Connect with* a thought, feeling, idea, emotion or sensation in the body that is bothering you, and rate** the issue on a scale of 0 to 10.

*Before beginning to Tap, it is imperative that you take a moment to mentally tune into a SPECIFIC emotion, idea, sensation in the body (etc.) that is disturbing you. Simply naming a common problem you have or repeating the generic phrases you hear in an online Tapping video is unlikely to yield the results you are hoping for.

**This is a subjective rating. What for you is a 5 might be an 8 for someone else. That is ok. What matters is that you pay attention to that number after each round of Tapping.

The secret to Tapping is to Tap on the negative!

Contrary to what may seem most logical or to what you may have seen in some online Tapping videos, Tapping works best when we first Tap on “negative” emotions such as stress, sadness, guilt, anger, upset, jealousy or fear.

This means that—at least in the beginning—we are going to want to avoid affirmations. We will NOT Tap on our positive outlook, or our positive expectations or on how good we wished we were feeling. The following are sample phrases we would NOT want to use when first addressing a problem: ‘how great I feel*,’ ‘how wonderful life is*,’ ‘how fortunate I am to have what I have*’.
