Folate aka Vitamin B9 is a necessary component to health especially for those wanting to become pregnant, who are pregnant and breastfeeding.

⚪️ pre conception~400 mcg
⚪️ pregnancy ~600 mcg
⚪️ breastfeeding ~500 mcg

Folate is important for DNA synthesis, brain and spinal development for baby aka neural tube development.

So what’s the difference?

Folate is derived in nature-food. Folic acid is a synthetic form, which is what you see in breads, pastas and pill form (prenatal vitamins).

However high amounts of folic acid can cause various side effects in the body because it cannot be metabolized appropriately if taken in high doses. It can cause insulin resistance in children and slow brain development in children (doses higher than 1000mcg)

Folic acid was introduced because we were not consuming enough folate from food, meaning that the consumption of leafy greens, citrus fruits, beans etc. were not enough for healthy outcomes.

So what foods have folate (B9)
✅ lentils
✅ spinach
✅ oranges
✅ walnuts
✅ mango
✅ avocado
✅ garbanzo beans/chickpeas
✅ black beans
✅ h**p hearts

There are many more options included but a diet diverse in fruits and veggies can most certainly get you the amount you need for your appropriate stage in reproduction!

I always encourage a healthy, well balanced diet high in fruits, veggies nuts and seeds to ensure that those micronutrients are fulfilled just as much as the macro 😉

You, yes YOU! Breastfeeding is TRULY about milk removal. The more consistently you remove milk, the more you make.

The cookies, brownies, teas, Gatorade, Brewer’s yeast, hops etc. will not make your milk do more than what the baby or pump (for my exclusive pumpers 😉) can do.

Can certain herbs be helpful at times, sure. But it should NOT be what is heavily relied on in the breastfeeding relationship.

YOU are enough!!

•Is breastfeeding exhausting at times? Yes
•Will you question your ability at times? Yes
•Will you consider giving up sometimes? Maybe yes!!

Breastfeeding is natural, but doesn’t always happen naturally! It is one of the BIGGEST learning curves you’ll probably ever learn.

Society, mom groups and articles online will have you believing you should be pumping 80 ounces of milk per day 🤦🏾‍♀️ this is simply not true.

TRUST YOURSELF
REACH OUT FOR HELP

Relearn the innate intuitive nature you have as a mom to know that YOU’VE GOT THIS!! The road might be bumpy but that doesn’t mean you stop!

Happy Monday 🤍🤎
