Nearly all of the infants with confirmed cases of neonatal abstinence syndrome identified in three Florida hospitals during a 2-year period had documented in utero opioid exposure. Yet only 10% of their mothers received or were referred for drug addiction rehabilitation or counseling at the time of their infants' birth.

Surveillance data from three Florida hospitals identified 242 babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome during a 2-year period.

Saturday night, the Ohio State Highway Patrol arrested Johnson in Circleville for operating a vehicle under the influence. Drugs stimulate the exact same reward circuit, yet their impact is amplified up to 10 times (in some cases). And so drug memories can become so powerful they soon dominate the entire system of rewards, usurping our natural hierarchy of needs. "Well, he**in causes he**in addiction." We’ve been told a story for a hundred years that is so deep in our culture that we just take it for granted. We basically think if you, me and—I guess there’s about 20 people in this office—if we all took he**in for 20 days, by day 21, because there are chemical hooks in he**in, our bodies would physically need the he**in, and we would be he**in addicts.
