Exercising in the summer heat can be rewarding but it also places unique demands on your body. From hydration strategies to spotting early signs of heat illness, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your workouts safe and effective.

Here are a few key tips from our Exercise Science team:
✅ Prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion with smart hydration
✅ Choose the right fluids (water + electrolytes, not just one or the other)
✅ Adjust intensity and timing to train smarter in hot conditions

July is UV Safety Month! Hre’s what you really need to know about sunscreen:

✅ SPF 30–50 is enough (higher isn’t always better!)
✅ Creams > sprays (sprays can miss spots + pose inhalation risks) But sunscreen alone isn’t enough. Think shade, hats, UPF clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours (10am–4pm).
✅ Look for broad-spectrum on the label (protects against both UVA + UVB)

This month at Bastyr University Clinic, we’re sharing a smoothie recipe that blends ashwagandha with leafy greens, fruit, and healthy fats:⁠

Green Adaptogen Smoothie
1 frozen banana
½ cup pineapple
1 handful of baby spinach
1½ cups unsweetened nut milk
⅓ cup plain unsweetened yogurt
½–1 tsp ashwagandha powder
½ tsp maca powder⁠

Blend until smooth.⁠

Quality sleep can improve mood, creativity, memory, and productivity—plus, it’s a vital part of reducing the risk of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression.
