🇵🇭 WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A HERO?

When I was younger, I thought a hero was someone who died in battle, who led an army, whose name was etched into our history books... like grand names such as Rizal, Bonifacio, Gabriela Silang.

But as I grew older, I realized a hero is not only found in monuments or textbooks. A hero is someone who chooses to do what is right, even when fear is louder than courage. A hero is someone who serves selflessly, who sacrifices without expecting recognition.

Heroes live closer to us than we think. They are our mothers and fathers, our grandparents, ordinary people whose extraordinary love shapes us every day.

One such hero in my life is my grandmother, 1st Lt./Dr. Mercedes Cuello Lazaro Musngi, a Filipina guerrilla medic and sharpshooter in World War II. She carried both a rifle and a Red Cross armband, saving lives while risking her own. But beyond the battlefield, she taught me something greater...

how to love God,
how to love our people,
how to love our country.

She left behind a legacy so great that I am no longer afraid to follow in her footsteps. For me and many others, she lifts up the very standard of what it means to be a hero...not just because she served a nation, but because she also served her family with the same courage and love.

And so today, I hope that one day, all the unsung heroes—parents, workers, neighbors, grandparents...will be recognized. You may not carry the title of a “national hero,” but in our hearts, you are a nation’s hero.

🇵🇭❤️ Happy National Heroes Day from the Philippines! Mabuhay ang ating mga bayani—remembered, unsung, and forever loved.

Thank you to the Department of the Defense for this privilege and great opportunity to interview DND Secretary Gibo! Department of National Defense - Philippines

This piece is especially close to my heart. It captures a interview turned into an intergenerational conversation between a Harvard psychology graduate (me a granddaughter of a WWII heroine and guerrilla combat medic) and our country’s Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro. Together, we talk about history, national security and the future of national defense and mandatory civil service.

You can grab a copy of The Manila Times tomorrow at 7-Eleven, National Bookstore, and other newsstands nationwide! 🇵🇭

OFFICIAL UPDATE: :(

Due to a hectic travel and coordination schedule especially I am currently traveling back home to the Philippines from Boston, we’ve had to respectfully step back from our upcoming speaking engagement at IPMS. While we were looking forward to honoring our WWII heroes through our keynote and exhibit, timing and logistics made it difficult to proceed smoothly.

No worries though !

✨🇵🇭 I Woke Up on the Front Page.📰

Tears. Awe. Utter disbelief.

This morning, I opened my laptop—and saw my face, my lola’s portrait, and our story on the front page headline of The Filipino Press newspaper. I was told I would be featured, and even then I was already so grateful… but never in a hundred years did I imagine this—the headline, the front page, the color, the legacy. Thank you LORD for this incredible honor and surprise!

I truly broke down in tears the moment I saw it. And read it with my parents...

In bold black letters it read:

"Only Filipina Harvard Graduate Featured for Honoring WWII Hero and Flying the Flag."

And there I was—holding Mommy Ched’s photo, wearing the Philippine flag, standing on Harvard ground… and thousands of Haravrd graduates, surrounded by everything she fought for.

An American dream and education come true, after her passing.

To Ma’am Susan De los Santos... head of Filipino Press, thank you for reaching out to me with this beautiful feature that is deeply moving, beautiful, and respectful feature. Maraming salamat po from the bottom of my heart.

Seeing myself on the front page...carrying my grandmother’s legacy into the world...is a dream come true that filled my heart with peace, pride, and overwhelming gratitude.

This wasn’t just an article. This was an act of remembrance. You gave space not just to me, but to 1st Lt. Dr. Mercedes “Mommy Ched” Cuello Lazaro Musngi, and to all the unsung and silent WWII guerrilla warriors, medics, comfort women, and Filipino and American veterans erased from official memory.

To Hannah Santos, thank you for being the kind soul who shared my story and guided it with such heart. This was my first time ever being on a front page...and what a surprise, what an honor, what a joy to be featured through!

That headline and dront page isn’t just mine.

It belongs to every Filipino and American Veteran, every intergenerational survivor, every descendant who carries legacy and grief on their back with quiet dignity. To GOD be the Glory.

And I one day, Ma’am Susan, I would be honored to personally show you the mini traveling WWII museum we built here—Bagong Bayani: The Mind Warriors Project in San Diego, someday....

BAGONG BAYANI FEATURES AT PVAO: We are incredibly honored to share this historic milestone:

The Bagong Bayani WWII Travelling Mini Museum has been officially featured and published by the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) ... a recognition we hold with great gratitude and respect.

From its grassroots beginnings in schools and community spaces to now being spotlighted by one of the most respected veteran institutions in the country, this is truly a moment we will never forget.

This journey began with a simple dream : to honor the memory of my grandmother, 1st Lt./Dr. Mercedes Cuello Lazaro Musngi, or Mommy Ched, a guerrilla combat medic, a battlefield amputator, a widowed mother of seven, a doctor, humanitarian, servant of GOD and a lifelong servant of the nation. Her love of GOD, country and of her fellow veterans has continued to echo through time.

What started as a tribute from a granddaughter has now become a call to remember ... not just for us, but for the nation.

In the words of Usec. Reynaldo B. Mapagu:

“Part of PVAO’s mandate is to perpetuate the heroic legacy of our country’s veterans and inspire the youth to become our future defenders. We are not alone in this endeavor and that is why we support and appreciate the efforts from the private sector especially coming from the youth of our country such as the group of Ylay Gosiaco. Their Bagong Bayani World War II Travelling Mini Museum and the Unsung Heroes Defending the Inang Bayan Diorama are potent reminders of the danger, sufferings, losses and victories our forbears faced particularly during World War II.”

To the entire PVAO family ...thank you.

To Usec. Mapagu, our historians, educators, and veteran advocates ...thank you for your support.

And to every veteran who lived, served, and sacrificed:To all veterans, educators, historians, and to every family who has carried the weight of war ...this museum is for you.

As I wrote in the article:

“To our veterans, know that you will never be forgotten. Your sacrifices live on through generations, and I pray that the young will honor you by seeing history through the lens of this museum ....created in memory of my grandmother and for all of you.”

So to every young person out there who’s only heard history from textbooks ...may you find in this travelling mini museum not just facts, but healing, identity, and the courage to continue the stories of those who came before us.

Mabuhay ang ating mga bayani. 🇵🇭

Let us continue to honor their names, tell their stories, and carry their legacy forward. Maraming salamat, PVAO. Thank you for believing in the power of remembrance.

🇵🇭🇺🇸 Happy Filipino-American Friendship Day 🇺🇸🇵🇭
JULY 1 — Kapit-Bisig Through Time

Our shared history has not always been perfect.
As colonized and colonizer, as ally and liberator,
we’ve stood on uneven ground—wrestling with wounds,
resistance, sacrifice, and survival.

But there is something profoundly beautiful
about what has grown between us:
a friendship forged not just in war, but in compassion.
In moments of mercy, protection, and solidarity
when humanity chose to triumph over hate.

Just like the powerful bond between
Mommy Ched “Mercedes” — a Filipina guerrilla medic,
and Sir John Daniel — an American paratrooper
who treated her as an equal, a sister-in-arms, a friend.

They did not let uniforms or flags divide them.
They looked out for one another.
Fought beside one another.
Believed in one another.

May we do the same today.
May Filipino and American communities
continue to build bridges that heal, not hurt—
to protect, uplift, and defend one another
in this ever-changing world.

Here’s to a friendship that remembers,
and a future that unites.

🤝 Mabuhay ang pagkakaibigang Pilipino-Amerikano!

KNOW WWII LIKE NEVER BEFORE.

Before June ends, I drew this poster in honor of our silent heroes.

Here you see them, our main characters. Not from the victors’ lens — but from the shadows where the forgotten fought.

A lone hallway facing the hell of WWII in the Pacific.

Four backs turned to us — one Japanese officer, one Filipino guerilla fighter, one American paratrooper, one Filipina combat medic — all staring into glowing panels of fire and memory.
Their silhouettes burn against crimson and ash… like ghosts waiting to speak.

📕 FULL COLOR. FULL STORY. FULL IMPACT.
From the firelit jungles of Luzon to the bloodstained beaches of Leyte... to the Battle of Manila...

From soldiers and spies to guerrillas, nurses, and the nameless who bled in silence...

BAGONG BAYANI: NEW HEROES IS COMING TO BOSTON! 🇵🇭🇺🇸

Mark your calendars — this July 27, 2025, the Bagong Bayani: New Heroes Mini WWII Exhibit will proudly be on display at one of America’s most historic sites — Brewer Fountain at Boston Common, right along the Freedom Trail.

We’re honored to join the “Summer Footprints of Boston” Fair, where art, history, culture, and community come together in the heart of the city where America was born.

🗓️ Date: July 27, 2025
🕓 Time: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM
📍 Location: Brewer Fountain, Freedom Trail, Boston, MA 02108
🎟️ Free admission — bring your friends and family

This is our final U.S. exhibit before we return home to the Philippines 😊 — and what better way to close this American chapter than in the city of revolution and freedom.

Come meet the Fearless Seven:

🇵🇭🇺🇸🇯🇵

Mercedes “Mommy Ched” – Filipina guerrilla combat medic and battlefield amputator

John Daniel – 11th Airborne paratrooper representing the U.S. liberation forces

Jose – Filipino guerrilla and martial arts escrimador, defender of his homeland through ancient skill and fierce loyalty

Yuki – Japanese Imperial officer, descendant of a samurai clan, caught in the moral storm of war, who ultimately chose redemption

Representing the Army, the Navy, the Guerrillas, and the Revolution

Each handcrafted doll is a vessel of real wartime stories — of pain, courage, healing, and hope. They’ve captured the attention of children, veterans, students, and families across cultures — inviting all to reflect, ask questions, and rediscover their roots.

Special thanks to Ms. Rhea So, Filipino American community leader and Activation & Event Manager of the Boston Common Summer Activation Project, for making this possible.

Let’s come together — despite our colors, our nations, and our past — to remember those who chose bravery over silence.

See you there!

SURPRISE NEWS FEATURE: This morning, I woke up to something I never expected—GMA News, one of the Philippines’ largest broadcasting networks and a true bridge to the Filipino people, reached out to me.

I’m still processing the emotion.

Thank you, GMA Integrated News, for seeing the heart in our story—for choosing to honor not just my graduation, but the memory of my grandmother, 1st Lieutenant Dr. Mercedes “Mommy Ched” Cuello Lazaro Musngi, and the legacy of our unsung Filipino heroes.

ARTICLE LINK: https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/pinoyabroad/dispatch/949840/filipina-honors-hero-grandma-harvard-graduation-legacy-worn-proud/story/

Please feel free to read, like and share the GMA feature

Mommy Ched was a Filipina guerrilla combat medic during World War II. She carried a rifle, performed battlefield amputations, and survived the unimaginable. She walked through fire so that one day, I could walk across that Harvard stage holding her photo.

I was deeply moved when GMA journalist Ma’am Sherylin Untalan told me that, to her, the image of me holding those framed portraits looked like I was “carrying a nation.”

I never thought of it that way. :(

But she was right.

In my hands were three sacred frames—not of myself, but of those whose lives and sacrifices brought me here:

My grandmother, Mommy Ched

A collage of Filipino veterans, guerrillas, soldiers, and community healers

The legacy of faith, resilience, and service that runs through generations

This story is for them.

Maraming salamat po, GMA News, for helping us remember. For giving voice to the silent strength of our grandmothers and grandfathers. For honoring our history.

May we never forget those who were almost forgotten.

Mabuhay ang Pilipinas. 🇵🇭

GOD bless you all.
