Month on the mat: I’m not flexible enough to do yoga. I’m too old to do yoga. If you have a body, you can do yoga. Just begin by regulating your breath. The time you spend nourishing yourself, means that when you show up for family, work, or friends, you are not depleted and have something to offer. Yoga is not just about the physical practice, asana. Yoga is also about what postures teach us — compassion, patience, and self-awareness. And maybe along the way of achieving Dhanurasana you learn something deeper than how to backbend — how to be in an uncomfortable situation and still be able to breathe and find some ease in your body, mind and spirit.

“See the pine trees and learn their lesson,” a friend once said. Pine trees are nature’s reminder that growth continues even in the winter.”
Winter is an important season in our lives. It is more than a time of coldness and snow. It’s a time of going within. A time to rest from the work that’s been done, a time to prepare for the lessons ahead. Long for the sun on your shoulders, but let the frost and cold come. The ground has been left fallow in preparation for nourishing the seeds of new life.
Honor winter’s lesson. Despite this time of lifelessness and inactivity, this is still a season of growth. Trust what’s being worked out in your soul. The snow will melt. The sun will shine again. The time will come to remove your heavy garb and return to the activity of life.

Cherish the winter. Cherish its quietness, the time
of going within to rest and heal. Cherish this time
of preparation that must come before new life.
Cherish the hope that lies beneath the snow.

Santosha—contentment: If you’re looking for happiness, look no further – it’s already inside you, and there are plenty of ways to uncover it on and off the yoga mat.

How often do we think to ourselves, I will be happier when/if?
If I do yin, I’ll be more flexible.
If I meditate, ‘ll be more at ease, more content.
If I am contented, people will love me.

Santosha is an inside job that asks us to ride the waves of our life as it is being presented, and to look for the sweet spot within that radiates satisfaction regardless of our life’s condi-tions. Life is a gift. We may not like all the comings and goings, but they make up a life our life.

Month on the mat challenge: Learn to rest, relax, and restore. Our state of mind, reflects the state of our nervous system. There is a close relationship between the state of our nervous system and our state of mind. When our nervous system feels unsafe, our brain automatically becomes more anxious as the fear centre of the brain (amygdala) takes over. When we’re stressed our thoughts are automatically more negative, impulsive and focused on worst-case scenarios. Trying to stop negative or anxious thoughts with positive thinking doesn’t work. Telling ourselves to calm down doesn’t work. Telling ourselves to get over it or let it go won’t work unless our nervous system feels safe. A frayed and fatigued nervous system can be calmed and restored through practises of inner work and self care. Gentle practices of yoga and meditation helps to reconnect mind and body.
