Can I be a birth doula and birth education supporter and empowering for women and also support her personal choices for birth or needed termination ?

Yes. Yes I can.

So often I see people judging others for things they know nothing about on a personal level. What you read about in headlines and billboards is NOT someone’s personal situation. Most of it is filled with misinformation in the form of only giving 1/2 the information on the statistics.

My literal job as a doula is to be supportive for what my client believes to be her best educated choice in her personal situation. It may not be what I’d choose for my personal life but that’s the beauty of freedom ... autonomy ... choice because I’m not in her shoes or life circumstances and I can’t gauge what next thing might break her.

Anyway - that’s where I stand firmly.
Educated informed choices = empowerment & womens right for autonomy

Be sure you ask your hospitals policy and your provider about donation and delayed clamping because it may say “no” you can’t do both.

You can delay cord clamping if you are storing cord blood privately for your family, but if you plan to donate cord blood then it is not advisable to delay cord clamping. The goal of delayed cord clamping is to allow some of the blood in the umbilical cord to flow into the newborn. This is most like...

I always look for this ☺️

The rhombus of Michaelis (sometimes called the quadrilateral of Michaelis) is a kite-shaped area that includes the three lower lumber vertebrae, the sacrum and that long ligament which reaches down from the base of the scull to the sacrum.
This wedge-shaped area of bone moves backwards during the second stage of labour and as it moves back it pushes the wings of the ilea out, increasing the diameters of the pelvis. We know it’s happening when the woman’s hands reach upwards (to find something to hold onto, her head goes back and her back arches.) It’s what Sheila Kitzinger was talking about when she recorded Jamaican midwives saying the baby will not be born ‘till the woman opens her back’. I’m sure that is what they mean by the ‘opening of the back’. “The reason that the woman’s arms go up is to find something to hold onto as her pelvis is going to become destabilised. This happens as part of physiological second stage; it’s an integral part of an active normal birth. If you’re going to have a normal birth you need to allow the rhombus of Michaelis to move backwards to give the baby the maximum amount of space to turn his shoulders in. Although the rhombus appears high in the pelvis and the lower lumbar spine when it moves backwards, it has the effect of opening the outlet as well.“When women are leaning forward, upright, or on their hands and knees, you will see a lump appear on their back, at and below waist level. It’s much higher up than you might think; you don’t look for it near her buttocks, you look for it near her waist."

My Story

I’m a military spouse, mother of two, labor doula, and prenatal yoga teacher. I taught yoga and prenatal yoga during my pregnancies while I studied for my labor doula certification through MaternityWise Institute. After attending births for a year I decided to go back to school for nursing with the end goal of being a Certified Nurse Midwife. I wanted to bring my doula skills into more birth rooms and help even more women (and let insurance foot the bill). My family PCS’d from Hawaii (where we spent 6 years) to Fort Irwin, CA. While I am here I am offering my doula services on a volunteer basis / by donation.

My birth philosophy is to support YOUR wishes and help educate you so your wishes are informed and leave you feeling empowered no matter how your birth unfolds. I do enjoy natural births but I also hold space for women who have their reasons for wanting or needing medical interventions. If you do need medical intervention I am there to help support you through them. Inductions don’t always go smoothly and epidurals aren’t always flawless. I am there to help mitigate the risks involved and provide you with an overall better experience.

Think about it.... You could be zoned out on your phone, not even talking with your spouse, listening to beeping machines and hospital sterile smells and otherwise disconnected from your birth experience. OR you could be actively participating in your experience - yes, even on an epidural. As a doula, I can help provide useful feedback based on contraction patterns and behaviors, and information obtained from cervical checks (done by your nurse or doctor) to help make educated decisions on how to keep labor progressing. I follow “Spinning Babies” techniques, optimal fetal positioning, and appreciate birth support practitioner and author Penny Simkin. Healthy Baby, Empowered Mom, Happy Family are my goals for you.
