In case you’ve been wondering why I haven’t been posting much lately, I’ve been busy moving half way around the world y’all! We are back in the States, and let me tell you.. it has been quite a ride! 😅

It’s taken a full year and a half to figure out food options, where to resource healthful ingredients, and how to stay healthy.. and I’m happy to report that I’ve FINALLY got my rhythm back 👍🏼🙏🏼💪🏼😎

Are you tired of feeling tired, bloated moody, and anxious all the time? 🙋‍♀️⁣

If you’re experiencing all these symptoms chances are your gut bacteria are wayyyy out of whack. And if you want to get your health back on track you have GOT to pay attention to those little microscopic germs!! 🧐⁣

The good news is, even if the “bad” bacteria have taken over in your gut, you can sway the balance of power over to the “good” bacteria relatively easily.⁣

Here’s my tried and tested approach 👇⁣

🔹 Don’t feed the bad bacteria sugar, they thrive on that stuff 🍬⁣
🔹 Feed the good bacteria cruciferous veggies-they NEED these to function 🥬⁣
🔹Repopulate your gut with good bacteria- with culture-rich yogurt 🦠🔹 Cut out gluten, especially the processed kind. Gluten breaks down the barrier between your gut and your bloodstream 🍞⁣
🔹 Finally, give your gut a break from food so it can use up your energy to heal itself-try fasting from 6 PM to 12 noon 🕓⁣

Of all the diets that are out there, (and there are A LOT) intermittent fasting makes the most sense to me 🙌⁣

First of all, it’s not really a diet - it’s a reset for your metabolism. In other words, it works on fixing the hormonal imbalance that is making you gain weight 💪⁣

Here’s the thing: if your body has extra insulin circulating around, this extra insulin will NEVER allow you to use your fat stores for energy 😧⁣

So picture this: ⁣
You want to lose weight, so you start to go to the gym 🏋️‍♀️ and eat less 🥗 BUT you have high insulin levels. Insulin doesn’t give your body access to fat stores for energy 😩⁣

So this is what ends up happening:⁣

1. Your metabolism slows down (you feel tired, low energy, cold) 🥶⁣⁣
2. Your brain sends hunger signals to get more food (you start craving high energy foods like carbs 🍞⁣
3. You decide this is too hard, and give up 😳⁣

Quit this cycle, and fix your hormones first! 💁‍♀️

Sound familiar? 👀⁣

Don’t ruin all the progress you’ve made throughout the week by going outta control on the weekend 🙌 Here’s what I end up doing: ⁣

1. Plan ahead and pick ONE meal to splurge on 🍽️⁣

2. If you meet family/friends more than once on the weekend, still stick to the schedule 📅⁣

3. Get comfortable with ordering green tea/sparkling water when meeting friends-you don’t HAVE to eat in order to socialize. If you do it a few times, your friends will come around! 🍵⁣

4. Extra cardio on weekends- so you can enjoy your meals guilt-free! 🏃‍♀️

Anyone else here find that your gut became SO much more sensitive when you turned 40? For me, it was almost overnight! 😩⁣

I eat pretty healthy, but just a couple of cheat meals, and BAM! The bloating is so bad, it reminds me of being pregnant again! 🙈⁣

So why does it happen? And why now? bloating can happen for a LOT of different reasons but the most common problem is an imbalance in the good and bad bacteria in your gut 🤔⁣

If you make a few calculated changes to your diet, the colonies of your “bad” bacteria 🦠begin to die out, and the bloating gets better. Trust me, these are my go-to tricks when I start to bloat 👇⁣

1. Take a break from sugar 🚫⁣
Bad bacteria THRIVE on sugar. Cut out their food source and they’ll start to die down 👌⁣

2. Intermittent fasting 🕗⁣
Giving your gut a break from digesting food allows it to repair itself and restore that all-important intestinal barrier between your gut and the blood 💪🏻⁣

3. Nourish the good bacteria with plenty of veggies and fruits 🥗
If you are NOT used to eating a lot of fiber, take it slowwww. Add a half-cup of greens like broccoli 🥦 or cabbage or kale 🥬 to your diet a day. Once your gut gets used to breaking that down, you can slowly add on MORE fiber! 🙌⁣

The good news is you can start to see a difference in just one week if you follow these simple steps! 😃⁣

The answer is no 🙅‍♀️ We eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner out of habit and convention 💁‍♀️⁣

And when we eat in this pattern year after year, our body comes to expect food at these times ⏰ Say you eat at 8 AM then 2 PM, and then dinner at 8 PM. Your brain will send a reminder signal to your stomach at these times that it’s mealtime 🍽️ You will experience this signal as “a hunger pang” although it has NOTHING to do with your body actually needing the food you eat. This hunger signal reinforces your belief that it is important to eat 3 meals. Every single day 🙌⁣

Here’s the thing. Most of us are eating more food than we need. And we are often eating from the time we wake up till late at night 🌙 when we snack. This is why, as a society, we are seeing record levels of obesity and diabetes 😟⁣

We have GOT to change our habits 🤔Not sure where to start? ⁣
Instead of plunging straight into a strict fasting schedule or severe calorie restriction, start by syncing with your own circadian rhythm 💁‍♀️⁣

1. Don’t eat the moment you wake up 🚫⁣
2. Have something small like a smoothie 🍹or boiled egg at 10 AM 🥚 3. Concentrate most of your calories around lunch 12-2 🕑⁣
4. Have dinner early, around 6 PM 🍽️⁣
5. Make sure your dinner is light- think soup/salad 🥗with grilled lean meat 🍗 6. Go to bed at 10 💤⁣

These small changes will help re-align your body with its natural hormone release schedule. You will feel more energetic and rested, while you lose weight! 💪🏻⁣

“I do really well all day, it’s the night time snacking that I struggle with” 😓⁣
I hear this ALLLLLL the time, from patients and clients 👀⁣

So why is it SO hard to give up night time snacking? 🤔⁣

It’s a HABIT! 80% of what we do every day is out of habit. So if you’re one of those people that eat while watching TV at night, your brain associates watching TV with eating 📺 🍽️⁣

So it will actually send a reminder signal to you to get food when you sit down to watch a movie at night. Breaking this habit is absolutely possible if you are mindful of breaking the connection your brain has made between food and TV 🧐⁣

The best way is to REPLACE this habit with ANOTHER healthier one. Because let’s be honest- if you’re used to having chips at night, and all of a sudden you eat nothing, you are going to experience craving. And it’s not fun! 🤦‍♀️⁣

Instead, make yourself a nice warm cup of green tea ☕ and sip on that while you watch TV. In a few short days, your brain will make the connection between TV and green tea! 😃⁣

EVERYTHING! When your body has ongoing smoldering inflammation, it is REALLLLLY hard to lose weight 😩⁣

Because inflammation turns on fat storage hormones! 🤦‍♀️ So even if you decide, I’m going to lose weight.. and then start working out and eating less- it won't give you the results you want despite your hard work! 🙌⁣

I have started working in a lot more berries 🍓 into my diet-and here’s why 👇⁣

1. Berries make your cells more sensitive to insulin. This helps regulate your blood sugar levels and will make you less insulin resistant 👏⁣

2. Berries have A LOT of soluble fiber. Fiber slows down food going through your digestive tract and keeps you feeling full. So if you’re having trouble with hunger pangs, up your fiber with berries 🙌⁣

1. Kefir yogurt: literally teeming with good bacteria 🦠 to help rebalance my gut 💪🏻⁣

2. Very dark chocolate 🍫: because this doc needs a healthy treat at the end of the day! 😂 and dark chocolate is so chock-full of antioxidants and heart-protective goodness I get to enjoy a couple of squares of guilt-free goodness! Lov how dark chocolate revs up my endorphins and hits the spot! 😄

3. Edamame: y’all know I’m trying to lose weight- so always looking for healthy ways to add more protein to my diet (without necessarily eating more meat) non-GMO organic soy lowers inflammation and is a great source of protein 👌 And who doesn’t love edamame!!?? 😁⁣

Do you know the days when you just want a really good hearty breakfast? 💁‍♀️⁣

I get like that on days when I work out in the morning 🏋️‍♀️- I crave protein and something really filling! 🥚 🥑⁣

This is a great breakfast option to get your protein on, but it also packs in a lot of nutritious anti-inflammatory greens 🥬. This recipe is packed with so much goodness it will keep you going all day long! 💪🏻⁣

Here’s the thing with smoothies 🍹- You can throw in just about anything in a good quality blender 😄⁣

So it’s great to experiment with your favorite fruits to make your own signature taste 👌 But in order to get the best bang for your buck follow these 5 tried and tested tips 👇⁣

1. Add 1 cup of greens to your smoothie- either kale or spinach 🥬⁣
Trust me, you won’t even notice the taste, and you get to start your day by feeding your microbiome- so definitely a win-win for all! 🙌⁣

2. Add some healthy fat- like half an avocado 🥑 - it keeps you full and suppresses your hunger 😋⁣

3. Add some color- now you get to play with all sorts of colored fruits- my faves are berries 🍓and pineapple- great taste, and are full of antioxidants 👌⁣

4. Add fiber- add a teaspoon of chia seeds and flax seeds. You won’t taste the difference, but now we’re talking serious fiber in your smoothie! 😉⁣

5. Super secret ingredient: Nigella (Kalonji) 👀⁣

If you’re on the go in the morning, like me 😫, but you still want to go have a simple nutritious easy to make breakfast, then a healthy smoothie is your answer! 😃🍹⁣

It literally takes 2 minutes to make and you can pre-prep the ingredients the night before! 💪🏼⁣

White rice 🍚 + bread 🍞 = Refined Grains 😩⁣

Which equals weight gain, a pro-inflammatory state, and a greater risk of insulin resistance. In other words, it’s bad news 🙅‍♀️⁣

Now I KNOW it’s hard to quit lifelong habits of having all our meals designed around bread and rice.. but once your body gets used to how GOOD it feels without them, you’ll have a hard going back! 🙌⁣

So here’s what you need to know 👇⁣

1. Whole grains have LOTS of fiber which help suppress your appetite and get you to feel full quicker 🌾⁣

2. They fight inflammation 💪⁣

3. They feed your microbiome 🦠⁣

4. They help with lowering insulin resistance 👏⁣

5. They taste good! 👌⁣

If you’ve never cooked with these grains 🌾, just start by simply boiling bulgur or barley as a side. OR you can cook with a little garlic, onions, and extra virgin olive oil for a little extra kick 😃⁣

Eat it with fish 🐟, daal 🍲, chicken🍗, beans 🥘, and of course a variety of salads 🥗 😃

When it comes to losing weight, cutting out sugar is KEY! But it’s easier said than done, right? 😩⁣

Well, I’ve given you my simple and easy ways to limit your sugar intake and decrease the sugar, and insulin load your body has to deal with 💁‍♀️⁣

1. No sugar in coffee ☕ was hard for me, but it helped to change how I drank my coffee- I now have 1 cappuccino and 2 cups of green tea...go gradual and lessen the sugar until it’s zero 🙌⁣

2. I don’t care how healthy packaged foods look, they are LOADED with hidden sources of sugar, so you get addicted to them 🥫 The more processed food you cut out, the healthier you will be! 💪🏼⁣

3. Ketchup is really more sugar and food coloring than a tomato sauce 🍅 So if you’ve been eating less bread and rice, but have whole lotta ketchup and other sauces with your meals, you may be getting more sugar than you think 😮⁣

4. Have mostly veggies and some fruits. That way you’re getting all that nutrient density with vitamins minerals and fiber, without a whole lotta sugar to go with it 🥗⁣

5. It’s hard to have NO sugar, right? So when that sugar craving hits, try eating a couple of squares of dark chocolate (80 %) You will satisfy that sweet tooth, and also get a lot of heart-protective anti-oxidants with it 🍫⁣

Stay strong people! I know you can do this!! 💪🏼
