USUI SENSEI'S ORIGINAL HAND (TEATE) TREATMENT
Clients remained seated for this treatment.

To begin the session, bring your hands into the
prayer gesture (gasshō).
Centre yourself, bringing your attention to the breath for a few moments.

Call down Usui Sensei's lineage blessings and ask for Reiki to flow.

To begin treatment, some people like to place their hands on the client's shoulders to 'connect.'

Draw the relevant symbols if you are still using them rather than connecting directly.
Silently intone their sound form (kotodama).

Remain at each of the five positions for about 3 -5 minutes or as guided.

The Five Positions are:

Zento-bu – Both hands spanning the top of the forehead between the hairline and the brow, with middle fingertips meeting.

Sokuto-bu – Hands placed on the temples, the sides of the head.

Koutou-bu – One hand on the middle back of the skull and the other hand on the brow.

Enzui-bu – The sides of the neck.

Toucho-bu – Both hands on the crown of the head.

The hand positions are held as long as you feel the energy flow.

You can work with hands on or off the body, working off-body over sensitive areas. Following on from the basic sequence, you can explore for any imbalance (byosen) elsewhere in the body and treat as needed.

Close the treatment with a simple 'Reiki Off' and ground yourself and the client, ensuring that you are both fully present in the body and in the room

Offer your thanks (kansha) for being able to facilitate your client's health.

REFLECTIONS ON REIKI /PART 12

REIKI RITUALS
The initiation practices of Western Reiki have been given a (fairly complex) outer form. For beginners, ritual helps to give form to content.

Usui himself was simply given the content directly and he transmitted it directly. He embodied Reiki and didn't need a ritual for transmission to take place. When the four naval officers, one of whom was Hayashi, appeared in the last couple of years, the Reiju form was developed to help the neophyte teacher focus and transmit the sacred intention.

With the threat of imminent war, it was not possible to offer new students the same kind of grounding that his long term students had been given.

Usui knew what he was doing, but many Reiki Teachers today don't really understand what is taking place, they simply follow the ritual they have been taught and pass the transmission on.

Transmission itself does not take place because of what is physically done. With Reiki a ritual is enlivened to help to focus intent.

In yogic traditions, initiation is given through one of four means, and for a Master, each one is equally effective - through will, through touch, through mantra or through focussed look. At different times, with different students, they will use whichever is the most appropriate. They are not bound by a particular method. You can see that most of those elements are present in the ritualised Reiki forms of initiation. In more modern offshoots of Reiki, the initiation rituals are even more complex, and there are actually many different variations, but this does not mean that the Reiki received is necessarily stronger or better.
